Among the falsehoods contained In Britt’s response to President Biden’s State of the Union address she included these words… “We know that President Biden didn’t just create this border crisis. He invited it with 94 executive actions in his first 100 days. When I took office, I took a different approach. I traveled to the Del Rio sector of Texas. That’s where I spoke to a woman who shared her story with me. She had been sex trafficked by the cartels starting at the age of 12. She told me not just that she was raped every day, but how many times a day she was raped. The cartels put her on a mattress in a shoe box of a room, and they sent men through that door over and over again for hours and hours on end. We wouldn’t be okay with this happening in a Third World country. This is the United States of America, and it is past time, in my opinion, that we start acting like it. President Biden’s border policies are a disgrace.”
It sure does sound as if Britt is talking about a recent victim of sex trafficking who was abused in the United States and led to a person to believe this women suffered this awful and terrible indignity because of President Biden’s immigration policies.
The only problem was you would have been led down a thorny path of inaccuracies, if not outright lies, and wrong.
The reality is the woman Britt is discussing is Karla Jacinto Romero and while she uses Romero’s horrendous story as a key part of her rebuttal to Biden’s address she is fully and totally full of crap by insinuating Romero is a recent immigrant who was sex trafficked by a drug cartel when the truth is Romero was coerced into working in brothels in Mexico during the George W. Bush administration and not anything whatsoever as Britt presented Romero’s
This is how Britt’s narrative unfolds…
First she blames policies initiated during Biden’s presidency for the surge of migrants at the southern border of the United States. The she states she went down to the border a short time after she was elected as a Senator from the state of Alabama in 2023. She then offers details about an unnamed victim that she says she met on her trip and directly implies the woman is a recent immigrant who came across the border t into the U.S. because of “sex trafficking by the cartels.” She then emphatically “suggests” that this victim’s… who evidence later uncovers is Romero… sexual abuse took place in the United States and by saying “We wouldn’t be okay with this happening in a Third World country. This is the United States of America, and it is past time, in my opinion, that we start acting like it.” And concludes her lie saying this victims alleged sex trafficking is all Biden’s fault by saying “President Biden’s border policies are a disgrace.”
But the truth is Biden has nothing to do with Romero’s story.
Romero’s own words before a committee investigating illegal human trafficking and slavery nine years ago state she that her mother kicked her out of her “home” and that she was trafficked by a professional pimp who sexually enslaved her in various brothels, roadside motels and homes in Guadalajara and other cities in Mexico where she estimated she was raped 43,000 times, by 30 people a day for seven days a week for until she sixteen when she was rescued during an anti-trafficking operation in Mexico City in 2008. Her testimony was ultimately used as evidence in support for H.R. 515 or Megan’s Law that mandates U.S. authorities share information pertaining to American child sex offenders when these convicts attempt to travel abroad.
Nothing in her story indicates that drug cartels were involved, or that Romero was ever trafficked to the United States… in fact Romero told that committee tha the men who paid to have sex with her were “foreigners visiting my city looking to have sexual interactions with minors like me.”
In fact Romero told CNN “I hardly ever cooperate with politicians because it seems to me that they only want an image. They only want a photo, and that to me is not fair.”
Romero added, “I work as a spokesperson for many victims who have no voice, and I really would like them to be empathetic — all the governors, all the senators — to be empathetic with the issue of human trafficking because there are millions of girls and boys who disappear all the time. People who are really trafficked and abused, as [Britt] mentioned. And I think [Britt] should first take into account what really happens before telling a story of that magnitude.”
This outrageous and false story by Britt is nothing more than Britt validating Trumps’ bullshit when he was the president and he claimed that that “thousands of young girls and women” were being smuggled across the border for prostitution.
In 2019, the Washington Post investigate that claim and found no evidence to support it. In fact the Post investigation discovered that the overwhelming majority of human trafficking prosecutions generally involved legal border crossings that were done through visa fraud and travel into the United States via air travel. And that there are relatively few cases that involve forced kidnapping across the U.S. border. This might be one reason Britt regularly cites a case that happened long ago and did not involve crossing the border.
Sean Ross, Britt’s communications director, who confirmed that Britt was talking about Karla Jacinto Romero released a statement that said, “The story Senator Britt told was 100% correct. And there are more innocent victims of that kind of disgusting, brutal trafficking by the cartels than ever before right now. The Biden administration’s policies — the policies in this country that the President falsely claims are humane — have empowered the cartels and acted as a magnet to a historic level of migrants making the dangerous journey to our border. Along that journey, children, women, and men are being subjected to gut-wrenching, heartbreaking horrors in our own backyard. And here at home, the Biden administration’s policies are leading to more and more suffering, including Americans being poisoned by fentanyl and being murdered. These human costs are real, and it’s past time for some on the left to stop pretending otherwise.”
That is a categorical and outright lie.
The truth is Romero’s story is indeed a tragedy of what some despicable humans do to other humans… in particular vulnerable young women and children… and may be expressive of other Mexican girls trapped in the sex trade in that country but Romero was not trafficked across the border and drug cartels had nothing to do with her being sexually enslaved and her story has nothing to do with Biden.
Britt’s failure to make that clear is nothing more than smear campaign being waged against Joe Bien and his attempt to get reelected as our president. It is a lie Britt is putting forth to further the lies that Donald Trump has expressed in the past and that he continues to express today as he tries to hoodwink we the people into voting him into the White House all over again repeating the travesty of his previous presidency.
Don’t get fooled again.
