WTF 2/14

Universal healthcare…

America touts itself as the best country in the world to live.

Why?

Because it is the richest… it is the freest… it is the most powerful… it has the best educators… it is simply the land of liberty and the center of democracy in the free world.

To all of that I say… sorry, no it is not. It is not the best country to live despite all that other hogwash.

Why?

Heather Holland

Because in Weatherford, Texas, Heather Holland… a teacher… died on Sunday (2/11) from complications due to having the flu.

So?

What does that have to do with America not being the best country to live.

Simply because when Heather wanted to go get her medication… Tamiflu… that would combat her health distress… her life-threatening distress… caused by the flu, she felt it was absurd for the medicine to have a $116 copay. And being a frugal and cost minded American she tried to do with out.

When her husband Frank Holland found his wife self-treating herself with NyQuil, he went to the pharmacy and paid for the tamiflu. He also said that Heather’s condition worsened on Friday and she was taken to a hospital where she was put in ICU. Frank added that when her blood work came back the doctors over seeing her case put her on dialysis early Saturday.

Heather died Sunday morning.

Frank said that he also thought the co-pay for the medicine was too high, but he blamed his wife’s employer-provided insurance coverage for that shortcoming, not the pharmaceutical companies.

To me they are both complicit in Heather’s death.

Frank, as well as her colleagues where she taught, all described Heather as a passionate teacher that had been with the Weatherford school district for the last four years.

A country that likes to pride itself as having the best of everything and being the best at everything but has a health care system that allows a person such as Heather to die because she simply did not think she should have to pay an exorbitant amount of her hard earned money to pay a copay for her required medication is a farce. No person should ever need to decide to open up their purse strings and pay for medicine that is required to combat an illness.

For some… $116 dollars is maybe the choice of eating well that week or doing without a decent health conscious meal at all for that week. Or paying the electric bill.. or … who knows what.

Simply… a $116 copay is obscene and absurd.

It is living and enduring in another American lie.

It is nothing at all if  America cannot provide the care necessary to give all of its citizens equal and all-encompassing health care where when a person is life-threatening sick from a disease or illness they will get the care and medicines they need without having to worry if they have enough damn money in their pockets or checking accounts to pay for it all.

Until America joins many of the other industrialized nations of the world in universality and affordability of health care it has no right to ever attempt to label itself as being the best at anything except kidding itself and lying about what it really does stand for. Profits, more profits and mostest profits.

I have sounded this dictum many times prior to this moment… but… until all Americans are guaranteed access to free and decent health care, America can never be a country where its people have life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness that is supposedly a part of its self-proclaimed heritage and birthright. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness which the United States Declaration of Independence says are unalienable rights of all human beings and which governments are created to protect. And without a country’s people having access to being free from the worry of how to afford healthcare then how would it ever be possible to exist with a truly livable life full of liberty and happiness?

In as few words as I can state it… health care is a damn right in our so-called advanced civilized world. Not a perk that only those with the proper amount of funds can afford.

If it isn’t then we really are not as advanced as we fucking think we are when it is all said and done.

Just in case anyone was wondering…

Number 37… America is number 37 according to WHO’s health care rankings. Below many shithole countries.

And…

The Commonwealth Fund has rated the U.S. health care system as the worst among the 11 developed nations it analyzed as part of an evaluation conducted every three years. The think tank also rated the U.S. health care system as the worst-performing of the nations analyzed when the last evaluation was released in 2014.

Yes, that is the Affordable Care Act…  which in my opinion was a vast improvement on how health care was being dispensed to we the people in America when it was enacted. In fact, it actually allowed close friends of mine to have access to needed health care that they otherwise would not be able to afford. In short, they might have died if not for the ACA providing them with affordable health insurance/care. The ACA was a big and necessary improvement in American health care that was still poorly ranked when compared to eleven other developed country’s health care systems.

The 11 countries analyzed were Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.

In addition to ranking last or close to last in access, administrative efficiency, equity and health care outcomes, the U.S. was found to spend the most money on health care.

Which is not a good thing. Because those spending the most to have health care are we the people who really can’t afford to be reaching into our pockets each month to pay highly overpriced insurance premiums plus expensive copays to get the health care we all need… we all require to live full and healthy and happy and truly free lives.

The U.S. is the only high-income nation to still lack universal health care.

That is criminal in my mind and a condemnation of the capitalistic corporate oligarchy that rules in America.

Also, in 2017, Business Insider rated the sixteen best healthcare systems in the world… the United States was nowhere to be found.

Qatar was on the list … at number fifteen.

Yeah, a Middle East shithole had a better healthcare system than America.

Now, maybe we shouldn’t talk so loud… or… act so proud about being the best of anything at all when a body takes the time to look at what matters the most in American society. Because it sure ain’t its people or their quality of how they live.

Especially when a Texas schoolteacher died because she thought her copay for a medicine that would have prevented her death was greatly over priced due to a greedy healthcare system in America.

Heather may have made a decision not to pay the $116 for her medicine but why in America… why anywhere, but especially in America…  should a person have to choose between saving money and their health?

Adult responsibility and childhood preservation…

I am going to present some facts and then give you my very somewhat short opinion…

1) A registered sex offender was reelected fire chief of a volunteer fire company in Spartansburg, a Pennsylvania town of 300… Roger Gilbert Jr., who was convicted of “involuntary deviate sexual intercourse” with a 4-year-old girl in 2001 and has completed a five-to-ten-year sentence for his crime, was elected to his second term as fire chief of the Spartansburg Volunteer Fire Department.

2) Spartansburg Mayor Ann Louise Wagner has told local media sources, “I support the fire department and their decision to have him as chief. The firemen have always elected their own officers and that’s how it’s always been done. We don’t question their decisions.”

3) Mayor Wagner said that she and others were aware of Gilbert’s crime and conviction.

4) Gilbert is on the Megan’s Law website as a “Tier 3” offender, requiring lifetime registration due to his crime.

5) Gilbert has been an unpaid volunteer with the fire department since 2010, serving one term as chief.

6) The victim’s mother told the local newspaper that she doesn’t think Gilbert should be allowed to hold a job that could put him in a position to talk to and be around children. But the ex-felon claims he’s changed.

7) Gilbert says, “That was 20 years ago. You know, the story you are telling kids is once you make mistake, you will be punished for the rest of your life. I’ve changed my life for the better. Every day I get up and try to do good.”

8) It is not illegal for Gilbert to hold his position.

My opinion…

Maybe it should be illegal…

Or… at the very least maybe the mayor should question the fire peep’s decision to elect him as their chief.

I am all for giving folks second chances but unless there are some fail-safe conditions placed on this person and his potential to be with other children… I mean some serious fail-safe conditions… then I agree with the victim’s mom…. I don’t think Gilbert should be allowed to hold a job that could put him in a position to be able to talk to and be around children.

At least not without some strict supervision. Especially in light of what has happened to the children who were entrust to Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics ex-doctor Larry Nassar who was recently convicted and sentence to the for the abuse of over  one hundred…  maybe even hundreds of little girls who just wanted to be very good gymnasts.

Updated report…

Gilbert resigned on Tuesday resigned as the chief of his volunteer fire company following a national outcry. He told local news outlet Jet 24, “My family and our community are being attacked. I didn’t want that to continue. All I have done for 18 years is good things. But outsiders are tearing us up. I felt the best thing to do was back away.”

My thought?

Whatever.

The best thing was  Gilbert just backing away. Not as a victim, rather to make sure that no children are put at risk and in danger of becoming the real victims.

White House staff and spousal abuse…

Recently, when Press Secretary Sarah Huckleberry Sanders told reporters, “Above all, the President supports victims of domestic violence and believes everyone should be treated fairly and with due process,” she stonewalled reporters queries about why Trumpty Dumpty didn’t personally denounce domestic violence after two of his aides… Staff Secretary Rob Porter and speechwriter David Sorensen… resigned amid allegations they had physically and emotionally abused their wives.

This contrasted with both Huckleberry Sanders and White House Chief of Staff John Kelly previously saying exceptionally very nice statements about Porter… despite Porters ex, Colbie Holderness, producing a pic of her with a black eye that she claims Porter gave to her while they were on vacation in Italy in the early 2000’s.

On Monday, Porter tried to counter that claim of abuse by saying Holderness bruised her eye in an accidental fall.

He also said his second ex-wife’s, Jennifer Willoughby (who also says she had sustained physical and emotional trauma due to Porters abusive treatment) claim that he broke into their house after they had already separated by punching through a glass pane was not exactly accurate either. He said he just tapped on the glass pane with his index finger and somehow his knuckle smashed through the glass.  When that happened, he claimed he was bleeding and decided to enter the house to wrap it in order to staunch the blood flow.

Willoughby asked him at that time to leave and called the police simply and mainly because he was required by a court not to be anywhere near her.

Trump did release a statement that said:

“We wish him well. he worked very hard. I found out about it recently, and I was surprised by it. but we certainly wish him well. It’s obviously a tough time for him. He did a very good job when he was in the White House, and we hope he has a wonderful career, and hopefully he will have a great career ahead of him. but it was very sad when we heard about it, and certainly he’s also very sad now.

He also, as you probably know, he says he’s innocent, and I think you have to remember that. He said very strongly yesterday that he’s innocent. so you’ll have to talk to him about that. But we absolutely wish him well. He did a very good job while he was at the White House.”

Willoughby responded to Trumpty in an essay published in Time Magazine on Sunday…

She opened that essay by writing… “On Friday, a friend and I watched as the President of the United States sat in the Oval Office and praised the work of my ex-husband, Rob Porter, and wished him future success. I can’t say I was surprised. But when Donald Trump repeated twice that Rob declared his innocence, I was floored. What was his intent in emphasizing that point? My friend turned to me and said, ‘The President of the United States just called you a liar.’

Yes. And so, he did.”

She later wrote… “Everyone wants to talk about how Trump implied I am a not to be believed. As if Trump is the model of kindness and forgiveness. As if he readily acknowledges his own shortcomings and shows empathy and concern for others. I forgive him. Thankfully, my strength and worth are not dependent on outside belief — the truth exists whether the President accepts it or not.”

She closed the essay by stating among other things… “In light of the President’s and the White House’s continued dismissal of me and Colbie, I want to assure you my truth has not been diminished. I own my story and now that I have been compelled to share it, I’m not willing to cover it up for anyone. And for any men, women, or children currently in situations of abuse, please know:

It is real.
You are not crazy.
You are not alone.
I believe you.”

And on Saturday Trumpty took to twitter to defend Sorensen’s resignation by twittering…

“lives are being shattered and destroyed by a mere allegation. Is there no such thing any longer as Due Process?”

Now suddenly Trumpty is concerned with due process? And, as Willoughby wrote in her essay, suddenly he is now the model of kindness and forgiveness?

Want to know something? Understand why he is saying these things?

Good old boys club

Because he too is an abuser of women.

Two dozen women have said he is guilty of sexually molesting or abusing them … of being victims of his illegal sexual conduct.

He is required to defend these members of his good old boy’s club, otherwise he might unavoidably give some sense or truth to the concept that these men, as well as he himself, are misogynist SOBs who have little respect for women or the supposed values, ethics and morals of we the peoples’societal reality.

Trumpty Dumpty is a hypocrite…

Yusef Salaam

On Sunday, a member of the Central Park Five blasted President Trump for being a hypocrite after he demanded “due process” for men connected with his office who were accused of domestic abuse and sexual misconduct. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Park_jogger_case)

Yusef Salaam, who was wrongfully convicted of beating and then raping a female jogger in 1989, said the President acted out of “his own affluenza” to protect Rob Porter, a member of his White House staff Rob Porter, who has been accused of domestic abuse by two ex-wives and a girlfriend and consequently resigned his post on Wednesday due to those accusations.

Trump had a full-page ad promoting execution of a group of Latino and Black children, who later turned out to be innocent. Trump paid close to $90,000 on full page ads in 4 newspapers.

Salaam said when he and four others were railroaded in 1989 into taking the rap for a crime they never committed that then-New York businessman Trumpty Dumpty failed to give him the same courtesy of due process and being assumed innocent when Trumpty paid for a full-page ad calling for the death penalty for himself and his four comrades who were but teens and at that point only accused in the Manhattan attack.

Salaam said in an MSNBC interview, “The Central Park Five, their families, we were not able to move on with our lives. Our lives were completely destroyed and devastated. Any kind of dream or idea or goal that we had in life was quickly erased by (Trumpty’s) accusation.”

The five black and Latino teens… now middle-aged men… were exonerated in 2002 after the real attacker confessed to the brutal sex assault when in late 2001, 12 years after the original incident, a man named Matias Reyes confessed to the crime. Police tested his DNA and found that it matched the sample found on the woman who was attacked.

Salaam also applauded another member of the Central Park Five, his friend Raymond Santana, for tweeting on Saturday…

“You should have spoke like that back in 1989… You should have spoke like that back in 1989…#thecentralpark5 you called for , you called for the #deathpenalty we were 14 and 15  years old we were 14 & 15 years old.. #kids.”

The infant king… liar… hypocrite… racist… and hater of all things good as well as anything that does not directly benefit his own fat ass. Our shit for brains feckless leader of the free world… Donald “Trumpty Dumpty” Trump.

Something to think about…

Another thousand words…

  1. Joe: Another thoughtful think piece.

I have claimed that the twentieth century gave rise to the application of the three worst political/economic systems the world has known: capitalism, communism (aka state socialism), and facism. The first is still alive and well, unfortunately. The second is alive but not as well. The third only exists in small pockets.

Let us hope they will all be gone soon.
