Wrestling Roundtable

Hey there Wrestling fans, welcome back to the Wrestling Roundtable. This week, we will touch on the Mae Young Classic. Is it living up to the hype? Who will win a singles title first, Jason Jordan or Tye Dillinger? All this and much more!

Editors Note: Sorry this is a couple days late. I scheduled it for the wrong day. Life of a single father. Enjoy your week!

1. Braun Strowman

Its not every day that you can say that you dominated Brock Lesnar and John Cena on the same night, much less ever. That is exactly what Strowman did this past Monday night, showing that he is ready, willing, and able to win the Universal Championship at No Mercy.

2. Jinder Mahal

The WWE champion was again out of action this past week, but he seems more confident than ever in his upcoming battle against Nakamura.

3. The Miz

Another Monday night, and another win for the Miz. It may be just a matter of time before the Miz is back into the thick of things for a World Championship. I mean he is the most must see WWE champion of all time. And now he has a baby on the way? Anyone else not buying that?

4. AJ Styles

A big win over Tye Dillinger on Smackdown keeps AJ Styles afloat in the Power Rankings. What is next for the United States Champion? Baron Corbin.

5. Shinsuke Nakamura

Nakamura remains the number one contender, but his absence this week on Smackdown drops him a spot.

In 1993, the WWE brought in Barry Hardy and Duane Gill to form a team called the Toxic Turtles. They were literally dressed up like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as part of a spoof of the cartoon and movie. They won the match, and it was never actually aired on TV, but only for the LIVE crowd. It was a one time deal, but it is in the history books as a victory for the two jobbers. Of course Gill would go on to spoof Goldberg and have one of the most successful Light Heavyweight title reigns in the history of the WWE. Here is a video of the Toxic Turtles.

The Mae Young Classic has so far had some good reviews, and some great competition. Have you watched any of the Mae Young Classic, and if so what are your thoughts?

Steve: I have not watched it, not so much because I am not interested, but simply that I don’t have enough time. From what I have heard, it has been really good, and there is some great female talent out there that could make a significant impact in the WWE. So I am looking forward to the womens division revamping and bringing in some fresh talent to compete. I think the WWE should have showcased some of these ladies on Raw just to get more viewers. I don’t know what the ratings were on the Network, but if I had more time I would definitely watch it.

Frosh: I watched every match, and I can tell you that I am really excited to see what these ladies will do on the main roster.  Some superstars to watch out for – Mercedes Martinez, Abby Laith, and of course, the two finalists Shayna Baszler and Kairi Sane.  Baszler is going to be an absolute beast, I can see her making an immediate impact on the main roster, however she needs a little time to develop.  She struggles with selling…her own moves…seriously, if you watch the tournament, you can tell she is pulling her kicks.  She almost looks like she is actually afraid of hurting her opponent.  She has to get over that and master control, and she will be a phenom.

Chad: I unfortunately, have not given myself the time to sit down and watch and I am kind of regretting right now.

Tyler: Didn’t watch it, but definitely surprised by some of the women who didn’t make it past the first round (Tessa Blanchard coming to mind immediately).  But it was a stacked tournament to begin with, so not everybody could make it.

Terry Funk, at the age of 72 years old is still competing inside the ring. He recently said that he would even like to face Ric Flair one more time. So while I can predict that everyone on this panel would not care to see this, the question is COULD Funk and Flair even compete one more time?

Steve: Are you kidding me? One of them would break a hip, or worse.. die! Flair is coming off of a serious medical condition that nearly cost him his life. But he “Aint dead yet Mother F***ers. So no this cannot happen. Funk is crazy enough to actually attempt to go through with it, but no way Flair could get into the ring again, unless it is some sort of promotional deal where he did literally nothing.

Frosh: Could they?  Probably….Should they?  Not in a million years.  Those two CAN get into a ring and roll around a bit, but if they do so, you will have some broken hips, dislocations and possible heart attacks.  I am not even trying to be funny, but these guys are too old to put on the kind of match that they would want to have put on.

Chad: No No No, They can’t have a competitive match. Terry Funk is going to be Mickey Rourke in the Wrestler if he isn’t already. People need to step in to not allow this to come to fruition.

Tyler: As much as that hits me right in the nostalgia, I don’t want to see two old men past their primes try to wrestle each other.

So far, No Mercy 2017 is shaping up to be…on paper… one of the best events of 2017, which Wrestlemania caliber matches already signed. Strowman vs Lesnar, Cena vs Reigns, and of course the Four Way Womens match. So as it stands right now, would you change anything going into No Mercy, add anything, or leave it alone?

Steve: Leave it alone. This is shaping up to be a good one, and as long as the writers don’t fuck it up, I think this honestly could go down as the best in 2017. On paper, it should.

Frosh: I leave it alone here.  It is already really loaded.  You have to save some of your best stuff to continue the momentum through the fall into Royal Rumble and Wrestlemania season. I have heard criticism that they should be holding the Reigns/Cena match for a big event like Mania, but I like having it on a lower tier PPV, it gives the PPV meaning.

Chad: The only thing I would Change would maybe put a 3rd team in the Tag Title Match just to have some different elements to the match and have the first of probably many matches with the Miz and Jason Jordan.

Tyler: For a mid-tier PPV, the card is absolutely loaded.  Don’t change a thing

Was the New Day winning the Smackdown tag team titles again the right move?

Steve: Absolutely. The Usos don’t do anything for me. They are not entertaining anymore, and are boring in the ring. The New Day is great and they should be the champions. Plus from what I understand they are set to break the record for most title reigns on top of their longest title reigns.

Frosh: Considering there isn’t really a tag team on Smackdown to take the titles from the two clearly top teams yet, I think so.  It could possibly set up for a Sanity debut.

Chad: I don’t think so as I think the Usos are the better team right in terms of In ring work and Promos right now.

Tyler: I’m not sure.  As much as I like The New Day, I don’t want an endless trading of the tag titles between them and the Usos.  Gives me flashbacks of the back and forth between Sasha Banks and Charlotte Flair for the Raw women’s title.

With competitive matches in back to back weeks against top stars. Who will win a singles title first, The Dillinger or Jason Jordan?

Steve: I am going to go on record here and say that neither one wins a singles title in the WWE. Jordan has already won a tag team championship, and I think he could do that again. I just don’t see the WWE pushing either one of these guys to the next level, even though they have shown they can go with the big boys.

Frosh: I think Jordan wins a title first.  I think he is primed to feud with the Miz (notice how the Miz brought him up in a promo on Raw), wheras I think Dillinger has a ways to go to win the US title.  I think Corbin takes it off of Styles, and maybe Dillinger or Roode take it off of Corbin.  If Roode gets involved, it could delay Dillinger’s title reign even more.

Chad: I think Jason Jordan is the guy to me he has a little more momentum to work then Tye Dillinger who had a great match with AJ on Smackdown.

Tyler: Tye Dillinger *should* be the first to win a singles titles simply because he’s actually over.  But I can see them putting a title on Jason Jordan to try to get him over.
