Kentucky Vs the World

In a recent interview with Bleacher Report, Calipari said beating those teams would be simple: Put together a Mount Rushmore of former Kentucky players and let them go to work.

“Oh yeah,” Calipari said when asked if a team of ex-Kentucky players would win the NBA championship.

There are 23 current NBA players that passed through Kentucky.

Guess who is the elder statesman?

Rajon Rondo. Came in 2007. It was Tayshaun Prince and Nazi Mohammed who both retired last year.

I have a pretty easy way to get my 12 deep roster, as only 11 guys are averaging 10 points per game, over thier career, so I lose Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Patrick Peterson and Willie Cauley-Stein. To get my 12th man I get to add one back.

So let’s go through the roster, and also, I need to win NOW- so the 4 rookies I don’t have I’m not missing.

So let’s see who our top guys are. John Calipari

C –  Anthony Davis
PF – DeMarcus Cousins

Bench C – Karl-Anthony Towns

Looking at the career, my top 3 guys are remarkably similar. All going between 20.5 and 31.9 PPC, 10.1 and 11.0 RPG and 3.0 to 1.8 APG. Nothing wrong there. Karl-Anthony Towns is going to eat more floor, so I’m putting him on the bench while the other two work on spacing.

PG – John Wallbradley-beal-john-wall

Duh

SG – Devin Booker

And you thought the Cavs had a dropoff after the top guys. Booker is a good player, going for 16.9 PPG but John Wall will be missing Beal in the backcourt.

Bench PG – Brandon Knight
Bench PG – Eric Bledsoe

I’m getting a lot of depth here, and I am under 13 PPG when I finally get someone that can play SF

SF – Julius Randle

Yes, he’s 6-9 so I have a GIANT team, but my backcourt is fairly tiny. Randle is going for 11.9/9.3 so my rebounding is taken care of, and if Team Kentucky is in the east, Bill Simmons just shit a brick with his Celtics. Let’s finish these up.

Bench F – Terrence Jones
Bench PF/C – Nerlens Noel
Bench PG – Rajon Rondo

So that’s all the Kentucky players that roll more than 10ppg.

C –  Anthony Davis Julius Randle Lakers
PF – DeMarcus Cousins
SF – Julius Randle
SG – Devin Booker
PG – John Wall

Bench C – Karl-Anthony Towns
Bench PF/C – Nerlens Noel
Bench F – Terrence Jones
Bench PG – Brandon Knight
Bench PG – Eric Bledsoe
Bench PG – Rajon Rondo

So I have basically 2 centers, 5 Power Forwards 1 Shooting Guard and 3 Point Guards. I think my choice as the 12th man is easy.

Bench SF – Michael Kidd-Gilchrist

And I think I start him over Julius Randle, as I really have the Rebounding already.

So does this team win the title?

C –  Anthony Davis
PF – DeMarcus Cousins
SF – Michael Kidd-Gilchrist
SG – Devin Booker
PG – John Wall

Bench anthony-karl-anthony
C Karl-Anthony Towns
PF Nerlens Noel
SF – Julius Randle
SG – Brandon Knight
PG – Eric Bledsoe

Deep Bench
Terrence Jones
Rajon Rondo

My starters give me 87.6 PPG, or 90.4 if I put Randle back in.

The Bench gets me 70.8- but of course most of them do start, so lets cut that a bit.

The starters (with MKG) average 32 minutes a game. Leaving 16 minutes per game for my bench. Isn’t that tidy? I take half the bench points and I get 122.6 points per game. Even if I take a third of the bench, and I get 111.6, right above the 111.3 that Cleveland currently averages.

The big question is Defense. Anthony Davis is, of course a great anchor, but are the rest? Anthony Davis

But that isn’t what sinks Team Kentucky.
Spacing, I have to shoot threes to get spacing in today’s NBA, and Team Kentucky simply doesn’t have great shooters from 3. Devin Booker and Brandon Knight both shoot 35% from 3, and that’s the BEST Team Kentucky has. That puts them 21st in the NBA, and that’s if NO ONE ELSE jacks up a 3 but my best two guys. Might be why Phoenix is sitting at 24th in 3Pt%

So Kentucky, if you look at that team makeup, would be a bear to play with, but a stunning lack of shooting would end up dooming them once they hit a complete team. This is a team of Power Forwards and Point Guards and not a ton else. A crafty GM could flip that massive Depth (Nerlens Noel & Julius Randle for Jimmy Butler or Paul George?) and really make a serious run at the title, but I have to say, Team Kentucky gets beaten in 5 games in Round 2.
