She persisted…

Courtney Privett
Courtney Privett

Imagine having a degree in engineering…

Now imagine going through life during the earning of that degree and then through your search for a job that degree suggested that you have an aptitude… and… hearing… “be quiet” … “don’t be bossy” … “know your place” … “the only reason you’re here is to fill a quota.”

Imagine you are a woman.

A woman with two daughters…

Now… imagine you are Courtney Privett making breakfast for your daughters… 2 and 5 years old… and you are trying to grok the news that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) stopped Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) from reading a letter that was written by Coretta Scott King in 1986 that opposed Jeff Sessions becoming a federal judge.

The same Jeff Sessions who is now a US senator and is Trumpty Dumpty’s nominee for Attorney General of America…

McConnell’s justification for stopping Warren from reading Ms. King’s letter into the confirmation hearing for Sessions was… “She had appeared to violate the rule (of imputing “conduct or motive unworthy or unbecoming a senator”). She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.”

McConnell not only stopped Senator Warren but in doing so also barred her from further participating in the confirmation hearing.

After Warren left the Senate chambers she read Ms. Kings letter… all ten pages of it… to various media people. In the meantime… back inside the Senate chambers several of Senator Warren’s male colleagues read Ms. King’s letter aloud.liz warren

None were rebuked by McConnell.

In other words… the main reason Elizabeth Warren was rebuked and then banished from the confirmation hearing was that she was a strong and powerful woman who had something to say about Jeff Sessions… which was that Coretta Scott King once denounced Sessions as being a person “(who) has used the awesome powers of his office (United States Attorney) in a shabby attempt to intimidate and frighten elderly black voters. For this reprehensible conduct, he should not be rewarded with a federal judgeship.”  And when the Senate Majority Leader tried to shut her up… she persisted. Ms. Elizabeth Warren… a woman… dared to speak when a white southern politician told her to stick a cork in it. She persisted.

Now… imagine the anger and the fear as a parent… and as a woman… you might feel as those words rumble around inside your brain and then down into the depths of your very being and soul.

Fear that your two daughters will not be free from the ignorance and stupidity of bigoted and chauvinistic male discrimination.he persisted

Anger that after all these years this form of sexist behavior is still real and thriving in society.

Imagine that feeling…

Privett did…

The drawing that heads today’s WTF column… and the one towards the right that accompanies these words… was the result of her thoughts…

The second… with a man… was drawn after some people suggested she draw an illustration for gay men… (or maybe even for straight men who decide to do jobs or activities that were at one time… and at times today still stupidly are… relegated to be “womanly”)…  because these men are similarly discounted and discriminated against… just as women are in society.

I applaud Courtney Privett…

She persisted…

Tin soldiers and Trumpty coming…

joe1And, many of us… especially of those on the so-called left… thought that Tricky Dicky and his minions and collaborators were so damn regressive and dictatorial?

Well… yeah… his administration really was that damn regressive and dictatorial and scarily, so.

But… Trumpty Dumpty and his assturd buddies are so much worse because they stare us smack dab in the face and then absurdly lie… most times against all reason and constitutional law… directly to us all and do it so damn seriously… without blinking an eye or even needing to suppress a snicker… and expect us to accept their lies… or worse… believe their lies as facts… and move on from there as if everything is going to be fine and dandy if not better for us all in Trumpty Dumpty land.

Where do I start?

Trumpty Dumpty himself is as good a starting point as any, I suppose…

It’s a well-known fact that Trumpty Dumpty often and derisively called Ms. Warren the racist-tinged name of Pocahontas. Well, guess what… he done did it, again.

According to officials familiar with what was discussed… during a recent bipartisan lunch meeting with senators, Trumpty sneered at the donkeys in attendance and said “Pocahontas is now the face of your party.”franken-warren

The racist and sexist pejorative was a direct reference to Warren being “put into her place” by Mitch McConnell.

But… we should all be grateful that even Trumpty knows how to show some restraint…

I mean he could have really just called Warren a squaw… or… a half breed bitch.

Or… the restraint he had when he said that the Mexicans pouring over our southern border are just thieving, lying, murderous, criminal rapists

mexico statementI mean… he could have said… the thieving, lying murderous, criminal, wetback spic rapists.

Or… the restraint he showed when he once said “I have a great relationship with the blacks. I’ve always had a great relationship with the blacks.”

I mean… he could have said, “Some of my best friends are niggers. Besides… I employ a lot of cheap labor and I need them niggers and spics.”

Or… the restraint he once showed when a former president of Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City quoted him as saying: “Black guys counting my money! I hate it. The only kind of people I want counting my money are short guys wearing yarmulkes… Those are the only kind of people I want counting my money. Nobody else… Besides that, I tell you something else. I think that’s guy’s lazy. And it’s probably not his fault because laziness is a trait in blacks.”

I mean… he could have used the words nigger and hebe or kike in the appropriate (inappropriate?) spots.black accountants

(Editor’s note: John O’Donnell, a former City, quoted Trump saying the above to him in his 1991 book. In May 1997, when Playboy magazine asked him about O’Donnell’s allegations, Trump said that it was probably true.)

Or… the restraint he showed when he spoke last year to the Republican Jewish Coalition and said, “Look, I’m a negotiator like you folks; we’re negotiators.”

I mean.. he could have said, “I’m a cheap bastard just like you kikes are.”

Or… the restraint he showed when during a 1989 Time magazine profile he said, “Who the fuck knows? I mean, really, who knows how much the Japs will pay for Manhattan property these days?”

I mean he… Oh… wait… the word Jap is pretty fucking racist already… ain’t it?

The point of all this? The man is a blatant, outright, goddamn racist who has no respect for any one person except for himself… and… even that is in doubt, in my opinion.

The only equality he believes in is that all human life is created equally, regardless of faith or ethnicity, as lower life forms to be ruled over by his and his ultra-rich cronies’ political ideology… which simply put is: More money, more money and more money… for them.

Then there are his close confidantes and advisers…

White House Staff
White House Staff

Freedom’s just another word…

Unless you have been in outer space circling around the planet; undersea living in some type of sea-lab research facility or some other variant of being out of touch with U.S. and world affairs, then you must know that White House Press Secretary (WHPS) Sean Spicer delivered a short post-inauguration press statement wherein he wrongly and purposefully distorted the number of people who used the D.C. metro, mentioned changes in security measures and said that the crowd at Trumpty’s inauguration was the largest audience to ever witness such an event both in person and around the globe.

Spicer also said… “…. attempts to lessen the enthusiasm of the inauguration are shameful and wrong.”

Keep that last comment in mind…spicer

Spicer can say what he wants… or was told to say…  but multiple media outlets provided photographic and video evidence that says otherwise. Or… to put it another way… Spicer was giving out falsehoods or what some people might call… damn lies.

Shortly after Spicer’s lie fest, along came Trumpty Dumpty counselor Kellyanne Conway to appear on NBC’s Meet the Press in a valium attempt to clear up Spicer’s messy tussle with the truth.

When asked by NBC political analyst Chuck Todd why Trumpty sent Spicer out to give a press conference that gave out misinformation or falsehoods, Wrongway Conway tried to do everything she could to obfuscate the conversation as she ran the gamut from talking about Trumpty signing multiple executive orders, to the Senate confirming some cabinet posts, to asking why a reporter had to put out a story that Martin Luther King Jr’s bust was removed from the Oval Office…

When Todd persisted (there’s that damn word again!) and said “You did not answer the question of why the president asked the White House press secretary to come out in front of the podium for the first time and utter a falsehood? Why did he do that? It undermines the credibility of the entire White House press office on day one.”

Conway tells Meet the Press' Todd: WH Press Secretary Gave 'Alternative Facts' In Press Briefing
Conway tells Meet the Press’ Todd: WH Press Secretary Gave ‘Alternative Facts’ In Press Briefing

And Wrongway said, “No it doesn’t. Don’t be so overly dramatic about it, Chuck. What…You’re saying it’s a falsehood. And they’re giving Sean Spicer, our press secretary, gave alternative facts to that. But the point remains…”

Todd with a complete look of befuddlement and a voice of incredulity sputtered… “Wait a minute… alternative facts? Alternative facts? Four of the five facts he uttered, the one thing he got right was Zeke Miller. Four of the five facts he uttered were just not true. Look, alternative facts are not facts. They’re falsehoods.”

Or… damn lies…

But… the more significant thing Wrongway touched upon was this… and it’s a theme that the White House inner circle will continue to trumpet as Trumpty’s presidency weighs on… that Spicer comment a while ago I told you to keep in mind? Memory? Bring it back to the forefront.

Wrongway said…  “If we’re going to keep referring to the press secretary in those types of terms I think we’re going to have to rethink our relationship here.”

And… Wrongway Conway continued to do her two-step sideshow of alternative facting until the magic moment finally dawned what it was really all about…

Which was when Todd asked… “So it’s a political tactic? It’s a political tactic to come up with alternative facts and try to set up the press as your enemy?”

Of course… there was more double and triple Trumpty-Dumpty-like talk about fake news and what not and the question was never answered… but… the first building block of creating a vision of the press as a distrustful and propagandist tool who won’t allow Trumpty to do his job was set in cement.

In another turn of events… Trumpty Dumpty for some reason has a pathological need to let everyone know that the only reason Hillary Billary got more popular votes than he did in the election was because of voter fraud… specifically voter fraud in New Hampshire.fraud

Why care if every damn person living or breathing; dead or alive; bused in from Massachusetts or from wherever was counted as being for Hillsberry?

The political clout of the New Hampshire electoral votes… in the overall scheme of the election… was a negligible effect. If, it was an issue of voter fraud in Florida or California where there were significant electoral votes at risk, then…

But… there wasn’t. Besides he won the damn election. So why keep bringing it up?

I have a theory… he’s a fucking nut!

Be that as it may be… that’s an issue for the 25th Amendment.

Anyway… when at a recent presser WHPS Spicer was asked about Trumpty’s need to keep bring this non-issue up… and, yeah, it is a non-issue at this point especially when even most elephants don’t seem to think there was anything hinky going on in the “Live Free or Die” state…

Spicer said, “The President does believe that. It’s a belief that he’s maintained for a while, a concern that he has about voter fraud.”

Once more… hold that in the old grey matter…

Ya’ll probably also heard that Michael Flynn has resigned as national security adviser over his contact with Russian officials before US President Donald Trump took office.

I don’t know a whole hell of a lot about this and I have only skirted the issues and have heard the same mostly conflicting and what I think are somewhat confusing stories being bandied around about what Flynn did and when did he do it (Hmmm… sort of has Nixonian tone don’t it?) and whether Trumpty peeps knew this or that… and… allegations that he consistently and persistently lied… during his security clearance vetting to be Trumpty’s national security adviser being one, which if true he could face charges of perjury… but… like I said I have only skirted the issues because… truthfully…. I gots enough bullshit on my plate to digest about this presidential regime that I believe is already more than enough justification to get his ass out of the White House that I want to keep on bitching on and hammering about.

BUT… I bring it up for two reasons…flynn

Wrongway Conway and Sean of the Dead Spicer can’t get their stories straight on this issue and I find that revealing.

Revealing of how damn amateurish these two mutts really are and revealing about how ignorant and stupid they are about how shit works in Washington and reveling how obtuse they are about how they think they can manipulate the press and by extension we the people.

Conway appeared on at least one news shows and said Flynn and she talked and Flynn agreed it would be best if he resigned and Trumpty was not involved.  And Spicer said on at least one news show… OK… let’s get right to it… Spicer said Trumpty was involved… Trumpty spoke with Flynn and Flynn’s resignation announcement was then forth coming.

The second reason is this…

Because it sets the stage to introduce another of Trumpty’s Dirty Diamond Dogs to the show…

White House senior policy adviser Stephen Miller…

Miller just had his Trumpty Dumpty coming out party where he was on five different news media shows on Sunday… He yammered on and on and on about the new surrounding Trumpty and Russia and Flynn’s involvement as well as fake news and voter fraud.

And, much like Kellyanne had a reckoning point with Chuck Todd, Miller had his reckoning point with ABC News host George Stephanopoulos.

During an appearance on ABC’s “This Week”, Miller tried to press doubly hard and even trebled down on Trumpty’s absurd voter fraud in New Hampshire claim with Stephanopoulos asking “Do you have that evidence?”

Miller responded that he once worked on a campaign in New Hampshire, and it’s “widely known by anybody who’s worked in New Hampshire politics.”

Stephanopoulos: “I’m asking you as the White House senior policy adviser. The president made a statement saying he was the victim of voter fraud, people being bused from Massachusetts to New Hampshire. Do you have any evidence?”

Miller: “If this is an issue that interests you, then we can talk about it more in the future.”miller3

And, after some similar non answer bullshit from Miller … Stephanopoulos finally said… “Just for the record, you have provided absolutely no evidence. You have provided zero evidence that the president was the victim of massive voter fraud in New Hampshire. You have provided zero evidence of the president’s claim that he would have won the popular vote if 3-5 million illegal immigrants hadn’t voted. Zero evidence for either one of those claims.”

Stephanopoulos then said… “Thanks a lot for joining us this morning.”

But that is not why I bring Miller into the conversation…

This is…

On all the shows he was on… during all of his appearances…  Miller made it clear that his sole purpose was to shield and protect Trumpty Dumpty as well as Trumpty Dumpty’s staff including VP Michael Pence. And… he did it extremely indelicately and with a touch of blunt fuck you malice.

But the one instance that stood out from all else? He told Face the Nation’s John Dickerson that Trump’s power exceeds everything and everybody… including the courts, we the people and the press… when he said…

“Well, I think that it’s been an important reminder to all Americans that we have a judiciary that has taken far too much power and become in many case a supreme branch of government. One unelected judge in Seattle cannot remake laws for the entire country. I mean this is just crazy, John, the idea that you have a judge in Seattle say that a foreign national living in Libya has an effective right to enter the United States is … is … is beyond anything we’ve ever seen before.

The end result of this, though, is that our opponents, the media and the whole world will soon see as we begin to take further actions, that the powers of the president to protect our country are very substantial and will not be questioned.”miller 2

Grokking that shit yet?

… that the powers of the president to protect our country are very substantial and will not be questioned.

He… at that very moment… had just said that Trumpty Dumpty is the one and only despotic dictator of the free world… which means… that the free world ain’t so fucking goddamn free when it’s all said and done didded.

One of the first thing a despot… a dictator… does is first question the aims and the veracity of the press, then moves to limit the press and ultimately take over the press so it becomes nothing more than a tool for disseminating propaganda…

And… this was the Trumpty Dumpty warning shot across the bow of one of the principles that America was supposedly founded upon… freedom of the press. Not to mention the direct challenge… hell, the actual assault… upon the American constitutional system… and… the concept of checks and balances.

With checks and balances, each of the three branches of government… the legislative, the executive and the judicial… can limit the powers of the others. This way, no one branch becomes too powerful. Each branch provides a check against the power of the other two branches.

This one statement by Miller went completely beyond any claim of fake news allegations or any other disparaging remarks Trumpty and his minions have expressed towards the media… the press… the people who report the news…

A senior adviser averred and point blank declared that the power of Trumpty Dumpty… Will… Not… Be… Questioned.

With nothing left to lose?

The “good news” doesn’t stop there either…

There is one more principle that needs to be brought into the picture…

Steve Bannon.bannon

I won’t even attempt to get into much depth here on who and what Bannon is… his Breitbart past… his image of himself as a Leninist revolutionary… of seeing himself as having a Darth Vader, or Satan prince of darkness, type of a role… or presence… in the future government of America…  his connections with returning to a form of the 1930’s America First movement… his connections with nativist and white supremacy ideals… or how various ideologies of his idea of what government and the world order should be.

That’s what Wikipedia is for any way… Right?

What I will bring up is how he sees the press… which is… they are the opposition… the enemy…

And… if, he envisions politics and life under Trumpty Dumpty as having not another party… not the Democrats… the Greens… the Libertarians… or… any other political entity as the opposition, but rather, first and foremost, it is the press as the opposition… then what he is saying… and saying it emphatically… whether he shouts it out for all to hear or not… is that he envisions a complete restructuring in how the politics and how society in the United States will operate. Which will be the state will tell you how to live and what you can and cannot do. And, That’s called authoritarianism with a capital A.

Another word would be… fascism.

Conway… Spicer… they are mere lapdogs begging for scraps from Trumpty’s table…

Miller and Bannon? These two are the real danger dogs… they are the Heinrich Himmler and Josef Goebbels who sit at Trumpty’s right and left at the main table.

But… I’ve got a secret to tell…

We will persist.

Just as all agents of progressive social and economic change have persisted down through history… we will also persist.

We will survive.

We will…

if_not_nowFrom those who are the spokespersons for change… to those who march in the streets advocating for radical change and performing civil disobedience… for human rights… workers’ rights and economic freedom… to those who are the advocates for the progressive and necessary evolution of life and societal change wherever and however they can… to those who persist against hatred, the enemy of equality, the viciousness of alternate facts, misinformation, lies and dishonesty… to those that actively resist all acts against social and economic advancement that would lead America into a better world… that would be so much more than the change that Trumpty, Bannon and the rich oligarchy that presently rules over all of we the people.

Yes. We. Will. Persist!

Another thousand words…

  1. Joe,

This may be the best column of yours that I have ever read. Yes, we will persist. But somehow the most important keynote for me is in the picture at the end. We will persist since we are not afraid! (Thanks to FDR for that reminder.) Fear is the opposition to all of us and in the long run will ruin those who try to use it against others.
