Standing Rock… what it really means…

The Standing Rock Sioux… Dakota Access Pipeline… Oil… Justice… an examination and  search for some straight and honest thoughts… and… what it’s really all about in North Dakota and how it’s important to all of us at this point in America’s reality…

Truth and justice in America…

joe1-jpg1Tomorrow is Thanksgiving… but… today… I wish to take out some time to think about some damn serious stuff going on in America today… right this very moment  in all likelihood on some level…  and also to reflect upon some serious stuff that went down in America some 52 or so years ago… ndpipelinemap

Most… if not all… of the people who read this column are aware of what is happening in North Dakota…. the Dakota Access Pipeline… aka Big Oil and Big Finance… want to run roughshod over some Native American people and build a big ass oil pipeline partially through what the Standing Rock Sioux consider sacred land, as well as under the nearby Missouri river which is the source of water for the reservation’s 8,000 residents, as well as many other citizens who live nearby and throughout the area that the pipeline will cross.  If, a leak from the pipeline were to occur… and that is not as an unlikely an event as many would think… it could literally poison what the Standing Rock tribe need for their everyday water needs… for personal consumption as well as for their livestock and crops. It would cause immediate and irreparable personal harm to their reservation as well desecrating their sacred lands.

The New York Daily News had this as a headline this past Monday (11/21)…

Protesters, authorities clash at bridge near Dakota Access pipeline amid freezing temperatures

The Daily News reported that “Scores of protesters clashing with riot-geared cops at the Dakota Access pipeline braved what appeared to be a gushing water cannon as temperatures plunged below freezing. The spray of frigid water coated demonstrators in plastic ponchos and froze to barbed-wire fencing at a police barricade that has been blocking a state highway since late October. The temperature shortly after midnight measured at about 26 degrees.”freezing-water-sprayed

The News also reported that the Morton County Sheriff’s department used subfreezing high pressurized water in freezing air temperatures water and that the sheriff’s department said it was a “justified” of a “humane as possible use” of non-lethal measures to subdue rioters.

Non lethal use of freezing water from powerful water cannons… tear gas… and… concussion grenades…

The Daily News further reported that the company responsible for building this pipeline… Energy Transfer Partners… said no sacred sites have been disturbed and that the pipeline will have safeguards against leaks and is safer that using any other means for transportation of the oil down south and into Mexico.

Last week, Kelcy Warren, the chief executive of Dallas-based Energy Transfer Partners, said the company is unwilling to reroute the pipeline.

Not said is that it is an exceedingly cheaper means of transportation and thus is also a much more profitable means of transportation for the oil corporations involved as well as the major banks who financed the pipeline and its construction.

Also not said, is that according to an analysis of federal data by The Associated Press…

Since 2009, the annual number of significant accidents on oil and petroleum pipelines has shot up by almost 60 percent, roughly matching the rise in U.S. crude oil production. And, nearly two-thirds of the leaks during that time have been linked to corrosion or material, welding and equipment failures, problems often associated with older pipelines, although they also can occur in newer ones, too.oilfaucet1-730x430

A worst case scenario happened in Michigan in 2010. Over 840,000 gallons of crude oil spilled into the Kalamazoo River from a pipeline leak. The cost to “clean up” that spill, at last accounting in 2014, was placed at $1.21 billion. While the treated area has been declared safe for humans, wildlife and the earth itself, no one has any idea has much oil… albeit in small amounts…  still remains, nor, how much oil may have escaped from the “contained” spill zone and traveled elsewhere and is still out there… somewhere…  just festering away in the environment. Scientists say that every oil spill is different, but a growing scientific awareness is developing of the damage that spills really can do… and… of just how long oil can linger in the environment, hidden in out-of-the-way spots. Some reports, from some of the biggest oil disasters, say it can take decades for oil to fully dissipate from the ground and from water beds. One scientist, previously connected to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), who did detailed studies on oil spills and the aftermath, said that at the rate the oil in some spills was breaking down it could still be there a century from now effecting the environment.

The Daily News had no comments from any of the protesters, or, from any members of the Standing Rock tribe’s spokespeople.

I read the New York Daily News every day… and this is the first time I have read anything, in my memory, in this newspaper about the issues between the Standing Rock Sioux and those that want to build this oil pipeline. As well as anything about the cops and other armed forces hired by the builders and the oil companies who use supposedly “nonlethal” and “mostly humane” ways of stopping any protesters from “trespassing” or trying to stop the construction of the pipeline.

I took the time to email the paper and said…

I just want to know… what took the Daily News so long to start giving this heinous and atrocious action against America’s first people… aka know as Native Americans or Indians… as well as the health of any other person regardless of nationality or ethnicity… any publicity what so ever? This corporate action for profit and profit alone against all human beings, as well as the planet we live upon, has been going on for months and this is the first time I have seen this newspaper or just about any other mainstream media outlook give this crime against all Americans any publicity what so ever.

And one last thing… when is our president… Mr. Barack Obama… going to step in and tell Big Oil and Big Finance to cease and desist with their totally unethical, if not illegal, actions?

Remember… everything Hitler did was legal.

Thanks for the reminder, Dr. King.

Let me add this…

Rubber bullets; growling, snarling, sharp toothed shepherd dogs; flash grenades; tear gas; mace and fire hoses in sub-freezing temperatures, all brought to bear on peaceful protesters in North Dakota, United States of America, 2016.

Remember the place and remember the year… it’s going to be a watershed, as well as a benchmark, moment in the history of we the peoples struggle against profiteering corporations who care nothing for we the people or for the planet we all live upon… unless… it means more money for their pocketbooks.

In 1964… there was another benchmark moment in American history… then in the fight for civil rights for Black folks… in exposing an ugly truth about America.

It was marked  and punctuated with tear gas; police clubs; snarling; growling, sharp toothed shepherd dogs and fire hoses that could tear the bark from trees that all were used against peaceful demonstrators… sometimes children, in fact.

Not much has changed when the short arm of law and order acts as the strong man for the prejudiced and biased few… be they a select section of a certain social caste or large corporations without a soul… to enforce, by hook or by crook and any other means possible, what is considered legal in Amerika.

Once more…

We should never forget that everything Adolf Hitler did in Germany was “legal” and legaleverything the Hungarian freedom fighters did in Hungary was “illegal.” It was “illegal” to aid and comfort a Jew in Hitler’s Germany. Even so, I am sure that, had I lived in Germany at the time, I would have aided and comforted my Jewish brothers.

And today… everything that Big Oil and Big Finance does in North Dakota might be legal, while everything the Standing Rock Sioux does might be against so-called prevailing law…

But…  maybe it is time to start considering what is needed is a sense of ethical behavior that takes into consideration the people as well as the history of criminality that has historically been done upon a certain segment of American people.

So… while it may be “against the law” for the Sioux to stand and fight against the corporate takeover of their sacred lands and their water safety… their water rights… and… for anyone to aid the Sioux by either standing with them in North Dakota or providing aid and comfort… maybe it is time for people everywhere to once more stand and deliver against unethical laws and unethical government and corporations.

I go to the well of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s seminal and watershed document in the historical struggle for Civil Rights for Black people in America…  “Letter From a Birmingham Jail”… and some key thoughts…

“I am in Birmingham because injustice is here…”

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”

“The answer lies in the fact that there are two types of laws: just and unjust. I would be the first to advocate obeying just laws. One has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws. I would agree with St. Augustine that ‘an unjust law is no law at all.’”

“An unjust law is a human law that is not rooted in eternal law and natural law. Any law that uplifts human personality is just. Any law that degrades human personality is unjust.”protest

“Let us consider a more concrete example of just and unjust laws. An unjust law is a code that a numerical or power majority group compels a minority group to obey but does not make binding on itself. This is difference made legal.”

“One who breaks an unjust law must do so openly, lovingly, and with a willingness to accept the penalty. I submit that an individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for law.”

Now… think about what is happening now in North Dakota…

As Thanksgiving Day beckons to us all on the coming morrow remember the truth of the facts that there are those who are still treated unjustly… at this very hour… minute… second… instance… and suffer from those that wield power unjustly…

Also remember one other quote from Dr. King…

“History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people.”

What reality is he living in?

The Bamster has been traveling around Germany lately. Maybe it’s his farewell tour to the world.  Whatever.obama-and-merkel

Any way…

On Thursday, the German press was having a love fest with the Bamster and Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, and through all their yackety yacking they eventually asked him… what the fuck happened in the states that ya’ll elected that schmuck Donald Trump who is threatening us all with his fear mongering bullshit?

And part of what he said was…  “Part of what’s changed in politics is social media and how people are receiving information. It’s easier to make negative attacks and simplistic slogans than it is to communicate complex policies.”

Simply put, he is crying the blues over Trumpty’s ability to use social media to his advantage and is blubbering… “It’s not fair that they can get their message out to the masses.”

And to some extent he has a point…jfk-nixon

Johnny-boy “we hardly knew ya” Kennedy used TV to beat Nixon way back when… the then new media outlet showed this squeaky clean war hero looking all American dude who spoke in nice clear elucidatory words versus this five o’clock shadowed gruff speaking sorta sweaty and smarmy outlier type of guy.

Ronnie Raygun used that same media to broadcast (didn’t hurt that he previously had made a career of acting in lots of B-movies) his aw shuckins guy from humble beginnings persona but I’m gonna use common sense combined with a big stick to beat down the scourge of drugs and the evil empire of them commies versus the Caspar-milquetoast out of date old peanut farmer from small-town USA persona of Jimbo Carter.

But… Pleasssseeeee…

First…  if, Trumpty could do it, then so could the damn donkeys… quit crying because you got out maneuvered and failed to adapt and adjust…

The donkeys ignored the people they had promised to fight for. Then they ran a person who was caught in bed with Big Money… Big Business… Big Corporations… Big Government… and Big god knows what all else… and… who had trouble distinguishing the truth from the lies…

Everything and everyone who stood against those that the donkeys said they were fighting for… their candidate was somehow connected with…

And… that is why they lost the damn election.

The first step to recovering your soul is to admit the truth. I suggest that the donkeys try it… at least all them donkeys still trying to slough off the blame on anyone else other than themselves.

That’s all folks…

That it for this week… a nice short WTF… well relatively short any way…

I have turkey day stuff to get ready and little time to do what needs to be done… sweet potato pies… maybe a cherry or apple one, too… my family’s special fruit bowl, especially heavy with strawberries, bananas and maraschino cherries… stuffing to be mixed and prepared… and… of course… a turkey to be finished brining and then tomorrow… roasted…

And, if ya’ll can help them that needs it… then… do it. And, if nothing else… maybe reach into your wallet and just drop and extra buck or two in some worthy and honest collection box somewhere.

My one wish for us all…

Go in peace and justice and truth… every damn one of us.

Another thousand words…
