Game of Thrones: Tyrion Lannister and Varys

Lets keep in mind that this is not a full breakdown of everything GOT, but more a primer of what has happened and what you need to know moving forward. (Example, the whole Drago storyline and Viserys? Not really needed since that’s a dead thread and everyone involved is dead.)
There are also a ton of minor players who will get their treatment.
Again, keep in mind, neither EJ or David have read the books, and don’t be that asshole that spoils the series for no reason but evil glee. What the hell is wrong with you? So if we miss something IN THE SHOW, by all means let us know.

Today we do everyone’s favorite buddy cop movie, Tyrion Lannister and Varys!

Tyrion Lannister

Tyrion LannisterTyrion Lannister is the smallest member of the Lannister family, and the younger brother of Cersei and Jaime. Not only does he have the drawback of being a dwarf in the late Middle Ages, but his mother died in childbirth, so before he even took a good look at sunlight, he had two major strikes against him, as both his father and his sister blame him for his mother’s death, but Cersei is even more blatant in her hatred. If not for his name, Tyrion would have had a much different life. Tyrion has been allowed the run the realm, drinking and whoring his way through life, and has been able to thrive either using his wits or his name in tough situations, worse case scenario, he can call for a trial by combat and have his brother come out and kill whomever is dumb enough to take the other’s side. Tyrion gets called to the city since his father wants him to be the Hand of the King, so he can try and hold the capital since Jamie has been captured and Cersei is a female. Tyrion has a tough time starting, but soon becomes a great Hand, and does wonders learning the rules of the court. Tyrion does a masterful job in defending the city from Stannis’s attack. Giving us the Middle Ages version of Napalm, the Wild Fire. Tyrion takes personal control after Joffery shows a yellow streak, and even survives an attack by one of the King’s Guard under orders from Joffery to kill him thanks to his Squire Podrick. He awakes after the battle, and has been stripped of being the Hand and is getting no credit for the win. Tyrion is just able to come back to court life when he is commanded by his father to marry Sansa, something neither wishes. The marriage is done, but not consummated, as Tyrion has no desire to sleep with a woman so young, or for the amusement of his family. He says he will not bed until she wants him too. Tyrion tries the best of his predicament, thinking that he belongs in King’s Landing, until Joffery is murdered and he is framed for the murder. Cersei puts him on trial, and everyone jumps on his casket, Jamie sacrifices his career to save Tyrion, agreeing to go back to the Rock and have Legitimate Lannister babies to carry on the family name and Tyrion can go to the Rock. When Shae, his lover, comes out and buries him, Tyrion demands a trail by combat. Jamie is unable to fight, and Bronn gets bought off by Cersei. Oberyn Martell volunteers to take the job for his own means, but loses due to his over-confidence and desire to extract information from the Mountain. Tyrion is put in the prison to be executed but is freed by Jamie. While escaping, Tyrion comes across Shae in his father’s bed, and kills her when she attacks him, Tyrion later finds his father on the privy, and after he calls Shae a whore, Tyrion shoots him with a crossbow, and escapes to a waiting Varys, who puts him on a ship, but Tyrion’s delay has roused the City Watch, and Varys makes the snap decision to go with Tyrion. Tyrion is a broken man, but Varys tries to rebuild his confidence. Jorah kidnaps Tyrion on the way there, and brings him to Daenerys, who does accept him into her small council, where he is reunited with Varys after Daenerys is taken away by Drogon.

Earl: Tyrion is in a bad predicament. He’s a stranger in a land that he has to rule. Daenerys is gone. Daario and Jorah are gone, but he has to rely on Grey Worm, Missandei, and Varys in order to keep Meereen in line. As we saw in Kings Landing some time ago when Tyrion was the Hand of The King, he definitely has the leadership skills but this is a whole different monster. With all of that said, he’s going to do fine. Tyrion Lannister won’t be the last man standing, but he damn sure will be one of them. Let’s enjoy that ride in Season Six, shall we?

David: First off, let me just say this show is an absolute failure if not for Tyrion. From a drunken dwarf who is just brutal to people, and might have killed a crippled boy to our hero. Just an amazing story and in my not humble opinion, the driving force of the whole show. Tyrion’s Trial is still my favorite part of the entire show sho far. Plus we got all the fun Buddy trips with Bronn, Varys and even Jorah. Going forward, I can’t see Tyrion winning the throne, but I can see him being the power behind the throne and that might be better than winning in his mind.

VarysFormer Royal Spymaster, known as the Spider. He is a Eunuch, and has raised himself up from slave slave status. He has been in the shadows early on, but has moved in when he needed to. Varys tried to save Ned Stark and send him to the Wall, but Joffery changed his mind and had Stark killed. Varys has a strong rivalry with Littefinger. Varys has a strong affection for Tyrion, saying he was one man that would save Westeros, recognizing his intelligence. Varys was delivered a Wizard that once owned him and had him cut, and used him as an example of how to play the long game to Tyrion- We have not been show what happened to the Wizard, a subplot I wish we had seen play out, but then again, we don’t see anything Varys doesn’t want us to see. Varys smuggles Tyrion out of King’s Landing after Tyrion’s Trial, and has Tyrion shipped in a box across the narrow sea. Varys makes the snap decision to leave with Tyrion, and goes with Tyrion towards Mureen, but Tyrion is kidnapped by Jorah enroute, but Varys again meets up with Tyrion again in Danareys’ court as Season 5 comes to an end.

Earl: I like Varys. I like Varys a lot and I’m curious as to where he is going though. I get a feeling Varys knows something we all do not know, and he is just waiting to spring that on us all. If anyone complicates the Game going forward it will be Varys. It’s only a matter of time. However, until then the Master of Spies is going to aid Tyrion in Meereen, and he is going to intrigue as much as he can to get Daenerys on the Iron Throne.

David: Varys is always going to be one of my favorite characters. His interplay with everyone is just awesome. Here is a ponder for you, however.
What is Varys ambition? He’s not into it for the Throne, as a eunuch, he can’t gain the throne and has no heirs, has no family, and his leaving with Tyrion means there is nothing material he cares about, as he left all his spies and wealth behind, he claims to care about the realm, but why? He’s not from there.
Here is my theory. Varys wants revenge on everyone. He wants the world to know that just because someone is cut, or poor or a dwarf or miscast, they still deserve a place in the world. I think he also thinks that people have a certain place in things, simply because he has seen the world go to hell since the Targaryns went away, so if he can put them back on the throne, that would allow him to rule from behind the throne and guide the next generation, to make sure people like Littlefinger wont corrupt the world. I think Varys is going to be a very disappointed man when he dies.
