Lets keep in mind that this is not a full breakdown of everything GOT, but more a primer of what has happened and what you need to know moving forward. (Example, the whole Drago storyline and Viserys? Not really needed since that’s a dead thread and everyone involved is dead.)
There are also a ton of minor players who will get their treatment.
Again, keep in mind, neither EJ or David have read the books, and don’t be that asshole that spoils the series for no reason but evil glee. What the hell is wrong with you? So if we miss something IN THE SHOW, by all means let us know.
Today we roll with House Tyrell, Yes, Mace is over with Arya across the narrow sea, but everyone else is here.
The Queen of Thorns. She is the grandmother of Queen Margaery, and while not the head of house Tyrell, her son Mace is, but everyone knows that the Queen of Thrones is in charge. She was born a bit too ahead of her time, not only dealing with her grandson’s homosexuality, but her position of power in the Seven Kingdoms. When she first shows up, its bailing out the capital with food and money, the breadbasket of the world. She first starts off with when Margaery is put in with Joffery, and she forms a relationship with Sansa to learn more about Joffery and the way he is. Horrified, she plots with Littlefinger to kill Joffery, and pulls it off, but unlike Littlefinger she sits there and watches it happen, cause Olenna don’t give a F*. She later gives Margaery some advice on how to get Tommen to fall for her before Cersei picks a different woman, and Margaery gets to be Queen. Now the Faith Militant has arrested both grandkids and the High Sparrow has told Olenna that her money and her power both mean exactly squat.
David: Olenna is a no-nonsense cut the crap type of woman. The one that knows everything about her situation and the limited world around her and doesn’t care what you or anyone else thinks of her. She’s got the money and the power to say and do whatever she wants, and she knows it. I kind of wonder why Mace is such a wuss with a mom like this, unless she just was overbearing and belittling to him, but the Grandkids are not like that. She might be my favorite character on the show and check out Diana Rigg, from Mrs Bond to Lady Holiday to the Queen of Thorns!
Earl: Lady Olenna is a wonderfully written character and is portrayed excellently on screen. I pray Lady Olenna lives throughout the entirety of this series. She needs to make it to the end, somehow. Lady Olenna is not going to sit back and watch the Faith destroy her family. Nope. She still has the Tyrell army at her disposal and she will make that call. The Tyrell’s know the Lannister’s are vulnerable and if they are going to strike, the time would be now.
Margaery Tyrell Baratheon
First seen married to Renly, she was fine with him liking men, even though he took her brother as a lover, she was willing to do anything to have him give her a child to finalize the alliance. After he was killed by the Smoke Monster, she moves on to Joffrey to solidify that alliance, she takes a liking (we are lead to think) with the fallen Sansa, and moves to have her married to her brother- a plan foiled by Tywin who marries Sansa to Tyrion to hopefully bring the North under the Throne. She’s got a bit of a mean streak to please Joffrey, and we are never really shown if she really feels that way, or just acting the part. She’s tried to be friendly with Cersei- who simply told her that the next time Margaery called her sister, Cersei would have her killed. Margaery and Joffery are soon married anyway, but Joffery is killed at the wedding. The Queen of Thorns not only confesses to her that she had a hand in “destroying that monster” but also tells her how she landed her husband and rose in status, taking her advice, Margaery sets her sights on Tommon, and is successful in marrying him- amazingly, 3 marriages and Margaery is still pure.. Margaery soon has a good bit of control over Tommen as he grows up, even to the point that Tommen suggest to his mother that she return to the Lannister homeland of Casterly Rock, and this ticks Cersei off to no end, and she moves to have Loras arrested by the Faith Militant for being a homosexual, fully knowing that Margaery would quickly defend her brother, leading to her arrest as well. Tommen has gone into seclusion without his mother and his wife around him.
Earl: Margaery was last seen still under captivity of the High Sparrow and The Faith. Her and Loras were given the option to confess their crimes, and maybe she will, or maybe she won’t. The Faith broke Cersei (to a point) last season, but I get the feeling Margaery isn’t going to wilt that easy. She has a survivors grace to her. She married Renly, Joffrey, and now Tommen all for the need to be Queen and I don’t think she gives it up that easily. Expect a surprise from her this season.
David: I love Margaery, thankfully she takes after her grandmother, the Queen of Thorns. The Problem is, the High Sparrow don’t care about the Tyrell name, money or position. She lied to protect her brother, and to get free, either someone has to come get her, or she has to confess. I’m thinking she might wise up a bit in prison, and come out a harder woman ready to take down Cersei once and for all. If she’s smart, she leaves the capital as soon as she’s free, lets Tommen, Cersei deal with the Faith Millitant, and come back with the Tyrell Army to figure out the winner.
Knight of Flowers, and gay lover of Renly Baratheon. He is a very good fighter, and now that Renly was killed by Melisandre’s smoke monster, he wears his armor. He was paired with Sansa by his grandmother, but he told his next lover- Olyvar about it, who is a spy for Veyrs, and that information was passed to Tywin Lannister, so then he was paired with Cersei to keep the Tyrells and Lannisters happy. During the build for that wedding, Jamie threatened him, telling him that Cersei would kill him in his sleep, and if he touched Cersei, Jamit would kill him, Loras retorts that he won’t let Jamie touch her either. Loras is next arrested for his homosexuality by the Faith Militant, and Margaery is also arrested for lying about knowing about his actions. Loras has a birthmark on his thigh, and Olyvar uses that knowledge to cement his testimony.
Earl: Loras is useless now. Absolutely useless. Loras probably hasn’t had much use since the Battle of Blackwater but we do still have to consider him because he’s still alive and he’s a Tyrell. With that said, I don’t think we will get much of Loras at all this season and if he is freed from captivity, I don’t think we see him at all after that.
David: I wouldn’t say he’s useless, lets keep in mind he’s beaten both Jamie and the Mountain in combat- well, jousting, but still- that is saying something. I don’t see Loras lasting very long if the crown storms the Faith Militant, but he can fight. Maybe we will get a battle between Loras and Lancel. One more thought, Olyvar betrayed Loras to the Faith, and Olyvar worked for Varys- and I’m guessing with Varys gone, he moved onto Cersei’s employ, and if Mace doesn’t come back from the Iron Bank, Loras is heir to the second richest house in Westeros. That puts Loras in a very powerful position if he can get out of King’s Landing.
