Story of a Martyr: Alex Rodriguez

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that’s real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything

On February, 2009 Alex Rodriguez’s career took a turn for the worst. Major League Baseball’s highly publicized and highest-paid player of all time, it turns out, tested positive in 2003 for banned substances. He has now become the face of how nobody is safe from suspicion in the steroid era.

Everybody could have done steroids. However, what amazes me and the majority of others is the way in which Rodriguez carries on as a martyr. He does not want any other name from that 2003 list, featuring 103 other baseball players, to come out. He wants to go through all the suffering by himself, so everybody could see what he has become… a cheater.

His cousin injected him after he got a neck injury… so he could fight through the pain and become healthier quicker… so he will perform at that high performance… so he would honor his contract. Many times did that needle go into his body, yet he kept denying of ever knowing what kind of substance (Primaboli) it was at first or how many times he injected it (36 times). All the while he was wanting to forget it, but we all know he remembers everything…

What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

On February 17, 2009 as Alex Rodriguez stares at all the cameras flashing in his eyes and the video camera recording his every reaction, he held a press conference in Florida alongside Yankee officials. As he was about to beg for his forgiveness from his teammates on the Dominican Republic team and the Yankees he started to choke up. As he stared looking at the microphone, with a sad and despaired look on his eyes, he leaned back against his chair, his eyes getting filled with tears as he was choked up for all these events and for losing some of his friends, he endured a barrage of camera flashes coming from every direction trying to get his best angle, while Alex Rodriguez looked to both sides to find any friends or anybody to support him, and he finally realized he was alone. Alex Rodriguez hoped to have at least his teammates on his side. However his teammates decided to dodge each question and not show support for their wounded “friend” all Alex Rodriguez wanted was a friend. However, that hope does not seem like it will come to be. When people started questioning his records and what should happen when his eligibility for the Hall Of Fame comes around, his answer was short, strong yet desperate: “That is not for me to decide.”

As Alex Rodriguez keeps watching the cameras all around him, and reporter after reporter drills him with questions, he can see his legacy slowly self-destructing around him. However, what hurts the most is the millions of fans around the world who looked up to him as a beacon of the perfect game. He was revered as a man of pure skill and will to become a dominant athlete who did not need to resort to cheating. Now those fans are misguided and lost. Their idol has been proven a false idol.

I wear this crown of thorns

Alex Rodriguez
Alex Rodriguez

Upon my liar’s chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stain of time
The feeling disappears
You are someone else
I am still right here

In 2007 Alex Rodriguez had an interview with Katie Couric. When Couric broached the subject of performance enhancement, Rodriguez said that he never has or would ever use steroids and that it was plain wrong. Now he not only apologized for his lie, but he declares himself the martyr of this generation of steroids. Rodriguez, as he sits outside of his spring training camp, cant make fully structured sentences without choking up. But we all know that whatever he says, we won’t care — because we know the truth.

He is a liar.

He is a cheater.

At this point he knows he has alienated himself from everybody around him. He now knows that his future is going to be more troublesome then maybe any other athlete has ever had in the history of the sport. However, now that his true colors have been shown, he still will remain the same person even if many of his supporters will probably abandon him.

If I could start againA-Rod-Suspension
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

Alex Rodriguez has not been shy in admitting that he would do it all over again, and has said that he made these mistakes because he was young and stupid. He has always been an amazing athlete, as his stats prove in the period before he ever did steroids. However, is not just that he did steroids; the cruelest joke is in the role model he became for millions of fans. In retrospect, it feels almost as though he was mocking us, the fans, and telling us “I can get away with it.” But in the end, justice prevailed… he got caught.

Many amazing athletes can and have bounced back from an injury to have incredible seasons the year after. But A-Rod wanted to continue to play and honor his contract, if he is to be believed. It is an honorable position which many athletes don’t take; but he went about keeping himself in the game the wrong way. Would he have done it a different way? I am pretty sure he would say yes. But do we know how he really feels deep inside or whether such a statement would be the truth?

After all, he has lied to us already…
