NFL Free Agent Day 1 Breakdown – AFC

Lets take a look at some of the early Free Agent signings, I’m not going to show them all, since who cares about the 4th string tight end right? I’ll try and update a bit as we go on, and just the actual signings, no rumors, ok?

Baltimore Ravensblt-ravens-helmet

Benjamin Watson was a decent tight end, and was a serviceable replacement for Jimmy Graham in New Orleans, he’s going to miss Drew Brees, but this is a good insurance policy for Crockett Gillmore and Lord knows Joe Flacco is going to need all the weapons he can get.

Cincinnati BengalsCincinati Bengals

Next to the Broncos, the Bengals had the most to lose in Free Agency, and they had a decent day, they were able to keep George Iloka and Adam Jones- so half the secondary is coming back, but lost Marvin Jones. I’m not sure he was worth the money the Lions gave him, but the Bengals made the better choice.

Cleveland Brownscle-browns-helmet

Well, they kept Johnny Manziel, but lost (wait for it) Center Alex Mack – who tried to leave before, but got matched, one of the better centers in the NFL, Tackle Mitchell Schwartz who got overpaid, but if you watched the Super Bowl, might be worth it, and WR Travis Benjamin, the best drug-free talent on offense the Browns have, who is going to LOVE Phillip Rivers. But wait! There’s more! FS Tashaun Gipson who was just a Pro-Bowler in 2014. Oh, the Browns added nobody. Were the Browns offices closed?

Denver Broncosden-broncos-Helmet

Well, I said Denver was going to have a rough free agency period, and it’s just starting. So far they have lost the QB they have been grooming, and Malik Jackson, who is going to steal money for the next two years. I wonder if Jim has gotten his Trevor Siemian jersey yet, cause that the only QB on the roster.

Lamar Miller isn’t going to help much, and Jeff Allen can be a very good offensive lineman if he’s actually playing. The problem is, he gets hurt A LOT.
The big signing is, of course Brock Osweiler, lets not talk about the money- even though they overpaid, lets talk about who was a better option out there. Both first round QBs will be gone before they draft, they don’t really have anyone they trust, and Brock Osweiler is young, and better than anyone in free agency out there. Sometimes you have to swing for the fences and getting the top FA QB is a good place to do it, when I could have QBed your team to the playoffs.

Indianapolis Coltsind-colts-authentic

Learning from the Browns, I guess. After some bad signing last year, the Colts just lost yesterday, with Coby Fleener going to New Orleans, so I wont be picking up Andrew Luck’s Stanford teammate anymore, and S Dwight Lowery took off for San Diego.

Jacksonville Jaguarsjax-jaguars-Helmet

For once they didn’t overpay much early, and picked up S Tashaun Gipson and P Brad Nortman kept TE Marcedes Lewis. I don’t get the Chris Ivory deal, they overpaid for a running back on decline- guess I spoke too soon.

Kansas City Chiefskc-chiefs-Helmet

Solid Day, they kept LB Derrick Johnson and DE  Jaye Howard then picked up Mitchell Schwartz, who replaces solid but always hurt G Jeff Allen. They did lose the NFLs most popular backup QB Chase Daniel.

Miami Dolphinsmia-dolphins-helmet

Made the big trade, going from 8 to 13 and picking up CB Byron Maxwell and linebacker Kiko Alonso.

You would think picking up two players that were lousy last year under bad contracts- you would be the team going up in the draft. Remember when Kirk Alonso was supposed to be good? Maybe going back to the 4-3 will revive his career. Byron Maxwell isn’t close to being the man he’s being paid to be, but he can be efficient. The big acquisition of course is Mario Williams, who might be more effective back in the 4-3, but geez, when is Miami going to figure out that big name does not mean big results?

New York Jetsny-jets-Helmet

Up and Down day.
Lost Damon Harrison- who they thought was too expensive, but at 9 Million? I would have paid it. They did pick up Matt Forte as a massive upgrade over Chris Ivory. He’s not going to be a 300 carry back, but if they can keep him to 18 touches a game – 3-5 catches, then he’s a great boost. The scary part is Ryan Fitzpatrick, whose price tage just went up with Brock Osweiler’s deal in Houston.

Pittsburgh Steelerspit-steelers-helmet

Base Hitting, as is the norm for them.
Resigned G Ramon Foster
Replaced Heath Miller who retired with Ladarius Green, who might be a better receiver at this point.
Moving on.

San Diego Chargerssd-chargers-helmet

The Chargers had a very good day, with resigning TE  Antonio Gates and picking up WR Travis Benjamin. Over on defense they upgraded with DT Brandon Mebane got some secondary help with Dwight Lowery.

Tennessee Titansten-titans-helmet

A swap of fourth round picks for DeMarco Murray, who got a new deal as well. I’m not sure it was a wise move, but it was a move. If Fisher can use Murray as he once did Chris Johnson, then it was a steal, if not, then I don’t see it really hurting them long term. Having Jeff Fisher might hurt Marcus more.
