WTF 10/21: Social Security or Insecurity?

Religious Crusades

When ya’ll be doing the old folks boogie down on the farm will ya’ll be having social security to pay your way or is it really social insecurity that will make promises that won’t get fulfilled?

Let ’em eat cake… if they can pay for it…

joe1News item: Seniors and people with disabilities relying on Social Security checks… which on the average is between $1,000 to $1,300 per person… won’t see a cost-of-living increase next year.

Not that it’s ever that big of an increase… but… when ya’ll counting every penny and scrimping and cutting corners just to pay the rent and put food on the table… anything that’s more than what ya’ll got in the previous year is better than nothing.

Wanna know why these folks who need the money the most out of us all ain’t getting a raise this year? Because the feds say its due to 2015’s low inflation which has been driven by of all  things… falling gas prices.gas prices falling

The NYDN’s reply to this so-called factoid?

Gas, schmas. How about the MTA’s discounted MetroCard fare… up 7% in 2015. Medicare prescription drugs, set for a 13% rise in 2016.  Cable bills, up 2% in New York this year. Food, up 1.5%.  Housing… up 3.1%.

But, don’t worry about none of that because inflation is low… the economy is rebounding… housing sales are going up… unemployment’s going at a constant downward rate… now at about 5.3%…. which is 2.5% lower than it was in January 2009, when the Bamster first took office in the midst of the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression…

But ya know what?

None of that means diddly squat to most peeps who rely on Social Security because they are… generally not working… they are fucking retired…

And… even if they wanted to work to help supplement the piddling amount they get from Social Security, a lot of those folks either can’t find work… most companies probably can’t use a worker in their upper 60’s to early 70’s ( age discrimination? Nawwwww….) or they are unable to work because they are suffering from a bunch of maladies that tend to affect those who reach the so-called retirement age… type two diabetes… osteoarthritis…

Or… they are just plain old sick and tired of having to work for a living…  after all… most probably been at this work thing since they were in their 20’s,so after about 45 plus years of getting up every day and catching the bus or jumping on a highway to deal with the commute to the job and then dpoing it all over aqgain when the quitting time whistle blows…

They kinda sorta are at the point where they say… take this job and shove it.COLA increase

But… the biggest stupidity here is that the government bases whether these poor folk, who need and depend on social security checks, will get a sad little weak-assed 1% or 2% raise on something that is called the cost of living adjustment, or COLA, which is derived from the rate of inflation… AND… because this year there has been about a 30% drop in gas prices inflation is low, there will be no COLA this year. (Note: The COLA is set every October based on the September inflation report.) So, no Cola, no Pepsi and no raise.

Why is that stupid? Simply, because the way the Feds measures inflation doesn’t reflect how people on Social Security live and spend money on what they need.

Like… folks on Social Security don’t really benefit from lower gas prices because them folks are no longer driving to and from work.

Like… medical costs have increased faster than overall inflation, and a lot of them old folks spending is on… right…. taking care of their health…  And, yeah these folks are getting Medicare and while Medicare is a great system, it don’t cover everything and there are still costs involved like copays and deductibles.

Like… a study by the Senior Citizens League found that Social Security benefits have lost about 22% of their buying power since 2000.  See… 2%, 1% or 0% raises don’t mean crapola when prices and costs are always rising.Burger-And-Fries-

Like… one more time… a typical retiree’s benefit is between $1,200 to about $1,300 a month… and last year’s1.7% increase meant about a $20 to $22 a month raise. That extra $20 or so really don’t help to pay for what a retiree needs to make through each and every day… doesn’t even really help pay to put something like a supposedly cheap meal of a burger and fries on the dinner table…

A burger that is made from ground beef that has gone from about $1.99 a lb in 2009 to over $4.00 a lb in 2015…

Beef-Price-Economic-Policy-JournalRight… the Federales own numbers say that over the last 6 years the average price for ground beef was right around 2 bucks in 2009 and in February of this year it hit a new all-time high of $4.24 a lb.

Let me know how many reading this have had their paychecks double since then? I be waiting…still waiting… no one… huh?

So, how in the hell can the government expect a person living on Social Security make it on what they get a month? Even if they got a 3% raise… they simply cannot.

Hell, even the middle class peeps can’t afford what is now luxury item on their dinner table… the lowly burger. Forget the LT and the bun… just the burger is more than the middle class wage earner can afford to give his, or her, family these days.

So, tell me… how is it that the guvmint can say we are in a “low inflation” environment?  Just go down to any grocery store with what is left over from the monthly pay checks after ya’ll paid the rent, put gas in the car pay the utilities and whatever other costs are due… prayed that no additional small catastrophes happened that would whittle the leftover cash further… and then toddle off to the grocery store and try and buy enough food and stuff to feed a family of four.

Tough to do… right?

Now, how in the hell can a retired person or couple try and make it on a $1300 check a month?

Fact… anyone that goes grocery shopping feels the pain of these rising prices every time that they go to the store. But the guvmint says buck up there little peoples everything is getting… better… every… day… and inflation is low.Corporate-Profits

Yet…  Corporate Profits… there  I said it… that dirty phrase… the elephant in the room…  Corporate profits have soared since 2009…

In the first quarter of 2015 profits… not net income… profits were up just under $1.9 trillion in the first three months of this year. Who says that? The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.

And… profits are now running over 180% percent higher than in the recession-plagued quarter just before the Bamster took office in… and… them profits is over 30% higher than in the best quarter prior to his taking office… which was in the third quarter of 2006.

So, tell em again why can’t the corporations kick in more to help out the system that enables them to profit so damn much? After all.. and some ya’ll ain’t gonna like this… the profits were made from the labor of all them working peeps out there living in the USA peeps… many who are now retired… or will be retired some day… they should get something more than a hearty handshake and an atta-boy or atta- girl and a measly $1300 bucks a month…

I’ve said this before… I say it now… it ain’t socialism… it’s just doing the right thing…

Lemonade out of lemons…

Quinn Duane was all set to get married in Sacramento, recently… in fact, after the wedding ceremony and exchange of vows she and her 120 invited guests were all set to chow down on salmon and tri-tip smorgasbord at the very, very, oh so very posh Citizen Hotel.

One small teensy weensy problem arose, however… the would be groom got cold feet just five days before the reception.

So the $35,000 gala was now a $35,000 fiasco…

Well in Quinn’s own words…  “When I found out… that the wedding would not be taking place, it just seemed, like, of course this would be something that we would do to give back”

Homeless being fed

See what the lady did was this… Instead of cancelling the rented room and the planned dinner she invited a whole slew of other folks to come feast on the catered affair… less fortunate families with children from local shelters.

Erika Craycraft, her husband Rashad Abdullah and their five children were among those filling their stomachs… Erika said, “I think it’s really generous to lose out on something so important to yourself and then give it to someone else is really giving.”

Yes… yes, it is… Erika done good is what she did…

We need a lot more Erikas in tis damn old world of ours is what we need is all I can say.

He said, she said… hello, goodbye… the answer is blowing in the wind…

During a hearing for her client, attorney Dawn Elliott said, “I’m going to act like I didn’t hear that.”

Then the presiding judge intoned, “I am, too.”

What all are these two officers of the court speaking?

Seems a Kentucky prosecutor essentially was giving his stamp of approval for racial profiling in an open courtroom trial.

Elliott’s client happens to be from Guatemala and was pulled over in July and eventually given a citation for driving without a license. Elliott is claiming the only reason her client was pulled over was due to his race or the fact that he looked like non-white.

Oldham County Attorney John Carter took objection to that allegation and in a courtroom video (obtained by the Courier-Journal, a local newspaper) of a conversation between the prosecution and the defense lawyers at the judge’s bench, Carter can be heard clearly speaking at the bench recounting Elliott taking issue with the defendant being pulled and caliming it was due because of his race. And, that’s when he added: “That’s probable cause.”

Carter later told WDRB-TV it was a misunderstanding. He was referring to a moving violation and not the dfendant’s race.

Prosecutor Carter heard saying being Hispanic is 'probable cause' to be pulled over by police.
Prosecutor Carter heard saying being Hispanic is ‘probable cause’ to be pulled over by police.

Elliott and the judge clearly do not believe that for a nano-second…

I’m trying to keep an open mind… no… seriously I really am…

I mean sometimes words do get taken out of context… I mean the prosecution could have really meant to say the fact that he … ummm… well… I mean…

Let’s see he… the dfendant… was being pulled over… no mention is made of why he is being pulled over is there?  The only discussion being made is centered on the defense’s allegation that the defendant was pulled over because he was Hispanic looking and then the prosecutor says “That’s probable cause.”

Aw, hell, there’s no helping this jackass is there?

Especially, since Elliott makes the point… “Clearly he had an opportunity to clear that up on the record over 24 hours ago, but now there’s buzz about it. My reaction and the judge’s reaction speaks for itself.”

I got nothing to say but I concur…

So… when’s all this shit gonna stop? This profiling bullshit…

Help wanted… but not enough… you know these times are gettin rough…

An ad in the October 15 issue of the New City Pennysaver read, “Laid back nurse, no haitians (sic), must have strong respiratory mngt (sic).”

Yep… that’s what the damn ad read…no Haitians

And to make matters worse… if indeed they could be worse than being blatantly racist… the ad, for a nursing position in the hamlet of West Haverstraw, appears to have been put in the Pennysaver by Interim Healthcare Inc., which is said to be one of the nation’s oldest and best-known medical staffing companies… and up to this point rather reputable.

A local politician from up that way said, “This is outrageous discrimination in its purest form. It is a direct violation of the Civil Rights act and is completely illegal!”

Ummm… yeah… he gets points for having clear insight into the obvious. I’ll give him that.

The pol added that he would be asking the New York State Department of Labor and the federal Equal Opportunity Employment Commission to conduct a full investigation into the posting.

Good for him… that’s the least that should be done… of course… the investigation will probably take three months and cost about a million bucks.  I mean… a special prosecutor and investigatory panel and all that will need to be appointed to handle it all.

The Haitian American Nurses Association registered its disgust on the company’s Facebook page when it posted:  “This is not just a disrespect of the Haitian nurses but disrespect for the nursing discipline and the entire community that have benefited from the services and care provided by the Haitian nursing professionals.”

Intermin Healthcare issued a statement that said the ad “totally unacceptable” and said they’ve launched their own investigation into how it got published.

“Please accept our sincere apology,” the company stated. “In particular, we apologize to the entire Haitian community.”

The Pennysaver also has come out and said an investigation was being made and that this was an insult to everyone involved and was unacceptable…

Now, I ain’t sure what all is going on here except this… regardless of how it got into the Pennysaver… someone is guilty of a really blatant racist act here…

Personally… I don’t believe any of the principals… Intermin or the Pennysaver peeps… authorized such an ad and believe it was probably some sick ass dumbbell at the Pennysaver, or the company who makes the printing plates for the paper, who thought it would be “funny’ to insert the “no haitians” into the help wanted advertisement…

Hopefully the last laugh will be on him (or her) when they get outed as the asshole who inserted the ad and then they will not only lose their job but get busted for committing a racist oriented crime and get some extra time tacked onto whatever jail sentence they ultimately get given by a court…

And, they best damn well get some time for this racist act and not just some “stern” lecture about being insensitive from some pantywaist judge in some hillbilly backwoods courtroom.

Donald speaketh…

Ya heard that Donald trump been saying nthe George the II didn’t keep us safe from the terrosits and all because of 9/11… right?

And he.. Trump… had since been called out on it and then doubled down on what he said….

Now I ain’t … nor do I think Trump is… saying that Georgie Porgie was complicit in allowing terrorists to succesfully atatck us on our soil but I also gotta say there were red flags all over the place that Bin Laden , et. al., wanted to hurt us where it would do the most  damage and make the world take notice…

Oh, really some of ya’ll be saying? Yeah, really…

Exhibit A…

Brief to Bush on 911

See the words…

… right at the bottom left center of that above illustration? Says… “For the President Only”? See the date? 8 August 2001… more than a month before 9/11?

Just saying… it’s not like the sitting prez didn’t get any warnings prior to 9/11 occurring… and that’s just one memo out of many that crossed the prez’ desk…

Now to be fair… under Wee Willie Winkie Clinton’s watch there was…

February 26, 1993, bombing of the World Trade Center…

Followed by…

1995 – Attempted crashing of plane on White House
1995 – Oklahoma City bombing
1996 – Khobar Towers bombing – Saudi Arabia
1998 – U.S. Embassy bombings Kenya/Tanzania
2000 – USS Cole Bombing – Yemen

While some elephants try to say that Wee Willie is completely to blame for all of these listed tragedies and say he never did enough to fight terrosim do we really believe he was persoanlly complicit in all of these terrorist aatcks?

Hardly… but, if, some might say that Bush the II didn’t keep us safe from terrorism then neither did Wee Willie Winkie Clinton…  or… for that matter neither did Bush the I, the former CIA head, succeed in keeping us safe under his  watch either… that 1993 WTC bombing happened only a scant six weeks after Bush the CIA King left the oval office… now… what kind of intel was he privy too? And, then never took the “proper and necessary” peventative actions…

The fact of the matter is if shit happens under your watch then you get the shit storm that follows…

This week’s gratuitous pcitures…

  1. Another winning blog, Joe.

I would like to amplify a few of your comments about those of us on social security. It is indeed true that many of us are scratching for every last cent and that the lack of a COLA increase hurts them. I agree
with you that those in this position need more support.

But there are also many who are in the position I occupy. I scrambled to get through school (with some help from parents and the gumment), to afford entry-level transportation, housing, schooling for my kids, and a bunch of other things no once supposedly should be without. I finally worked out of that trap and am now financially comfortable in retirement.

The point is that there are those who are not comfortable in retirement, and by no fault of their own. It is unfair that those who have made the same effort I have made are not getting the same benefits in retirement. I think any society should be measured by how well it supports its members. By that test, the United States has failed miserably.

  2. I agree…

The corporate oligarchy that really rules this country… and most probably the world as well… needs to somehow be made to finally calpitulate a larger part of their profits back to take care of those that are responsibile for making those profits… we the people…

Now, how they that I really don’t care.. .they can pay more taxes to fund programs like medicare, social secuirty… create tutition programs for anyone who wants to go to a public university… pay much higher wages while reducing the cost of goods… I really don’t care… as long as we the people get a fair and responsibile share of the multitrillion dollar profits. And despite their taking care of contributing all this extra moolah, they will hardly feel, or see, a dent in their damn multitrillions of profits.
