The Evolution of Minecraft

Over the course of the past couple of years or so, my oldest son has became addicted to the game Minecraft, he created his own YouTube channel just to upload videos that he records of him playing them. His screen name is DaEpic333. Minecraft has evolved over the years and has become one of, if not the most popular non-sports game that kids play now a days. So it led me to ask some questions on this. What is is? Why is it fun? How do you play? Does it have any educational value, as some doctors have gone on record by saying. So I asked my son, Andrew, who is only twelve years old mind you, to write a little article for me about Minecraft. So I am going to publish this article, as well as some of his videos on YouTube, so you as a parent, or as a player, can get an idea on what Minecraft really is.

The following article is written by Andrew Hall, known on YouTube as DaEpic333.

Minecraft is a sandbox game created by Markus Persson (or Notch as he is referred by). Later on, a Swedish company called Mojang developed and published Minecraft. In the game you play as a character named Steve in a very blocky terrain. You can go from many approaches as to creative mode if you want to build humongous woks of art, Survival if you want to go through trial, error, or the occasional creeper to the face. Or if you are feeling daring, try out hardcore mode. Get together with your friends, hop on a server, start a server, Your imagination is the game.

Minecraft has gone through many stages of development. At first, it was released in an alpha state on May 17, 2009. After many updates, a full version was released on November 18, 2011 only one day after Minecraft was released on ios. Soon after that Minecraft became more and more popular. So popular that it got released on the Xbox 360 on May 9, 2012 and on the Playstation 3 on December 17, 2013. 9 months later, Minecraft is released on the Playstation 4 on September 4, 2014 and on the Xbox One the next day. Being so popular, Minecraft is one of the best selling games of all time reaching over 40 million copies sold.

Minecraft can be a hard game to understand with its controls. Here they are.

WASD: move

Spacebar: jump

E: open inventory

Q: drop item

LEFT CLICK: Punch/use item

RIGHT CLICK: Build/interact

There are five modes in Minecraft. Creative, Survival, Hardcore, Adventure, and Specter Mode. In creative mode you have no health and unlimited blocks. In survival mode you start out with nothing and will have 10 hearts. Hardcore mode is just like survival only with one twist, If you die, you have to delete your world. Adventure mode is a mode mostly used for adventure maps which is like a normal video game. And Specter mode is where you can fly just like in creative but also go through blocks. Chose your mode as you please.

As you know, Minecraft is a popular game, but WHY! Well, with normal games today, you buy it for 20 to 60 dollars and play it once or twice. But more often than not, that game will be put aside after that. That is a normal game. But Minecraft is not only a game, it’s a medium, like singing or drawing. Minecraft is a way to express who you are. Whether your jumping around in the new Mario game or going on a heist in GTA V, You cant really show who you are by shooting cops. So Minecraft is not just another FPS (First Person Shooter), it’s a way to express yourself.

Lots of parents say video games “rot the brain”. That is not true at all. Minecraft is already pretty educational with people developing skills such as task management, strategy, and a sharper memory. Minecraft can help kids futures. With its mechanics, kids can become better at jobs like architecture or engineering. It’s already educational enough, but people have taken it one block further. People have built their entire country on Minecraft hoping kids could learn about their history and geography. People have written historic novels, religious text, and even maps, and changing them into Minecraft. So thanks to this game, kids are learning good skills and getting good grades on their history test, learning a different country’s geography, and learning even more about their religion. So before you parents that think Minecraft is a dumb game because it disobeys gravity, give it a chance first.

People think that Minecraft is very overrated game. It’s true, Minecraft is the most overrated game in my opinion; But is has done some very good stuff. From giving shy people a way to express them selves, to Giving kids a head start on possible future jobs. It wont stop here. Minecraft keeps updating and updating, putting new stuff into the game. The only question is, what will it do next?

If you are a fan of Minecraft, I highly recommend you follow Andrew (DaEpic333) on YouTube as he uploads videos pertaining to Minecraft, and even I get entertained by them, and I honestly have no idea what he is doing.
