Serena Williams seems like she’s been around forever… Serena Williams has done stuff in tennis that few, if any, have ever done… is she one of the greatest of all time? In fact… could she be the Greatest of All Time?
Serena Williams has just added her 6th Wimbledon Grand slam event title, and as the reigning Wimbledon title holder, she becomes the oldest woman (33) to win a Grand Slam tournament in the Open era of professional tennis… and… it comes 16 years after her first Slam event, the 1999 U.S. Open.
She is the only player in history to win all 4 Grand Slams at least once after having turned 30.
If, she wins the one more Grand Slam tournament she will have won 6 Grand Slam events in a row as well as winning a Grand Slam in a calendar year… plus… if, she wins the next Slam event it puts her all-time Slam total at 22 tying Steffi Graf and just 2 behind Margaret Court… is she the greatest women’s tennis player ever?
Presently, she is the reigning Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, US Open, WTA Tour Championship and Olympic women’s singles champion. She has 36 Grand Slam event titles, which is 7th on the all-time list… 21 in singles, 13 in women’s doubles, and two in mixed doubles. The 13 Grand Slam doubles titles were with her sister Venus and the 2 sisters have never lost in Grand Slam finals.
She has now held all 4 Grand Slam singles titles simultaneously twice in 2002–03 and 2014-15, and, is the 5th woman ever to do so. Along with her sister, Venus, she, also, has held all 4 Grand Slam women’s doubles titles simultaneously (2009–10).
Additionally, Serena is a five-time winner of the WTA Tour Championships, and, has won 4 Olympic gold medals… 1 in women’s singles and 3 in women’s doubles… yes, partnered with her sister Venus… and… it is an all-time record.
She is also only the third person in history to win each major at least three times, joining Court and Graf… of course.
Over the course of 379 days, Williams has not lost a Grand Slam singles match… and… Serena is now in position to do something that has not been done in 27 years… win a calendar-year Slam. If, Serena wins at the US Open, she will have equaled Steffi Graf’s run of 4 Grand Slam titles in 1988… and tie Graf’s total of 22 Grand Slam singles titles.
She could be the best ever… bar none… and that’s without surpassing Courts 23 Grand Slam title.
Is Serena the Greatest Of All Time… the GOAT of tennis? Forget that DirecTV commercial… sometimes you want the Goat… or rather… to be the GOAT.
So, is she? Is Serena “The Greatest Of All Time”?
