WTF 7/8… Times are a-changin’…

The times are a-changin’…

and ya know what? It’s about time we all starting getting up off our asses and maybe made a little noise… beause people get ready… times are a-changin’… whether ya’ll like it or not…

Here for your perusal are some of the noise makers for the week and my noise in return…

The Stars & Bars get unlikely support…

joe1Amid all the discussion about the meaning of the Confederate flag and the calls to remove it from government buildings after a rebel flag supporter shot and killed nine people in a historical black church, I saw this recently… an article about a woman who was interviewed for a documentary called “Battle Flag” which deals with folks and their thinking about the Stars and Bars good old boy wavers.

And, not just any old southern lady but a black woman who proudly waves the Confederate battle flag because it “represents freedom.”

She also believes that “slavery was a choice.”

In an interview for a documentary “Battle Flag,” ex-New Yorker and now Virginia resident, as well as a Tea Party activist, Karen Cooper says she joined the Virginia Flaggers, because they defend the rebel flag against those who “worship ignorance, historical revisionism and political correctness.”

Cooper says the Confederate flag symbolizes a movement away from big government.

In an interview for “Battle Flag,” she says, “I actually think that it represents freedom. It represents a people who stood up to tyranny.”

Really and honestly? It wasn’t a form tyranny to enslave folks so that a relatively small group of white Anglo Saxon rich folks could get richer?

Her words… “I’m not advocating slavery or think that it was right. It wasn’t and none of my friends think it was. It was just something that happened. It didn’t just happen in the South… it happened worldwide.”

Ummm… yeah, that’s correct. Slavery has been around probably since man existed… someone takes over a certain territory then they usually enslave those that were there… that is…if they didn’t just slaughter them. And, slavery evolved from there until certain colonial and then US businessmen decided to buy men from places like Africa to use as a cheap labor.

She gets a little wiggle room here when she says it didn’t just happen down in the Southland because slavery was rampant, and is still rampant, throughout this damn old world of ours…

But… sorry, it didn’t just “happen.” It wasn’t some form of a natural process like evolution or something. Pleaseeee…

What she added to her comments made me wince and think… “Excuse me ?!”

“Slavery was a choice,”… the choices were being a slave or that slaves could choose death.

Now I’m all for choice and choices and I do understand some times about being between a rock and a hard place… but… I gotta tell you them’s some damn limited choices she be presenting here… let’s see… on the one hand I can be a slave and just hope against hope I get a good ole massa who won’t whip on me and/or separate me from my wife and kids and send me someplace I don’t wanna be… or… I could just up and die.

Hmmmmm… if it were me in that position I think I’d be saying… thanks for nothing lady. And, ya’ll notice she never said anything about choosing freedom? Hmmmm…

Now, here’s her rationale for saying them is good choices… being a slave or being dead…because of that good old patriot Patrick Henry hisself… because he gone and done said… “Give me liberty, or, give me death.”

Kinda slim logic there if’n ya’ll aks me…

She does say… “If, we went back to that kind of slavery… no, I couldn’t do it. Give me death.”

Woman… you go around supporting that symbol of racism from a past gone by then, hell, who knows, maybe we might go full bore around and ya’ll just might get to see how much ya’ll is willing to back up your own words.

She continues her logic by saying… “I feel I’m a slave now because the federal government does control me. I can’t smoke what I want to smoke. I can’t drink what I want to drink. If I want to put something into my body, it’s my body, not theirs. That’s tyranny!”

And, them’s the issues she is really all that fired up about and important that she thinks going around with some peeps who like to wave around the Stars and Bars is cool and a symbol of revolt against tyrannical rule?

I mean that’s like some Jewish person meeting up with a bunch of skinheads who be waving around the Nazi swastika flag… and… just because they say they believe in doping and drinking without restraints… he up and goes around demonstrating with them.

Cooper says she will be out there peacefully waving the rebel flag to “protest those who have attacked us, our flags, our ancestors or our heritage.”

She says, “I know what people think about when they see the battle flag: the KKK, racism, bringing slavery back. So I knew it would be something for people to see a black woman with the battle flag. (I mean) How can it be racist if I’m out there with them?”

Okayyyy… gotta say that’s some damn thin logic there if ya’ll be asking me.

And… it can be racist because it is… that’s why. Doesn’t matter if a brigade of folks of many colors… a veritable rainbow of people… were marching and demonstrating with the Confederated Flag, it would be racist. Strange as all get out but still an action involving a symbol of racism.

Once more around the mulberry bush… that flag represents a part of our past that was extremely racist, ignorant and plain old dumbass stupid… as well as being viciously nasty.

Ya can say whatever about the Confederate Flag it still don’t make it a flag that speaks about justice, freedom and fair play when ya’ll get right down to the bottom of things and the thick of the argument.

But, go ahead and wave the damn thing around… if, that’s what pleases you… go wave it… if you think it is a symbol against tyrannical rule… but… when the day comes that someone treats you with disrespect primarily based upon your skin tone… don’t say I didn’t try to warn you.Confederate flag & Cooper

I have Polish blood running around through my veins… its mixed with blood from other ethnic groups… I’m a mutt… a mongrel… like a lot of my fellow Americans…

One day when I was just a grammar school tyke I was absently scribbling some Nazi shit on some book cover of one of my school books… my Polish uncle saw it.. he sternly looked st me and said… “Do you know what that means? What they did to our people? Don’t waste your time with that kinda stuff.” That was it. Message was delivered.

The Confederate Flag should mean the same thing… do you know what that flag represents? What the people who waved that flag did to black people? What they thought about anyone who didn’t belong to their “class”?

Message delivered?

Hopefully… Maybe?

Just read this today (7/8) in the NYDN…

“The last thing he saw was his wide-eyed baby girl still cr

adled in his tattooed arms, clutching her to his chest after a fatal bullet tore through his head. Blood splattered onto little Taylor, a precious 1-year-old who escaped unharmed. But her father, 21-year-old Allen McQueen, was killed in the afternoon gunfire on a Bronx street.”

McQueen with Taylor
McQueen with Taylor

And a few sentences later in the article… “The guy shot a man with a baby… Who does that? Who shoots a man holding a baby?”

The baby… Taylor, who celebrated her first birthday, last month… fell to ground with her dad atop her… Arielle Corkery, 23, who heard the shots and then watched the violence from a homeless shelter ran out turned the dead dad over reached out and picked up Taylor… all covered in blood.

The shooting took place across the street from a playground that always has kids running around playing and doing whatever children do… a witness said just before he was shot that McQueen “looked scared” and warned some kids to skedaddle from the area.

The gunman fired once and missed before chasing McQueen down the street and then shot twice more… McQueen dead in his tracks fell to the ground with daughter beneath him…

A relative said that “Every breath … every minute he was excited to see his daughter.” Another said… he didn’t deserve to die hat way…

No one deserves death but death is required of us all… it’s just how we leave this world that is undetermined… sometimes it is with a sigh and a whisper and then you’re gone… and… sometimes it’s in a bloody heap on some NYC… Bronx… sidewalk all covered in blood and gore… with a daughter … just one-year-of-age… in your arms…

But… understand this… Allen McQueen’s own dad said, “He had problems with other people, but he’s young… (But) He was a good dad. He had just left our house, too. He said he was taking her to the park.”

What McQueen’s dad was inferring was that according to police records McQueen had been arrested 23 times, mostly for robbery and assault, and was known to carry a pack what is often called heat… a weapon… a handgun. He was also known to run with a street gang that was ironically called the Taylor Crew… and… doubly ironically died on Taylor Avenue.

As of Sunday, 168 people have been killed in the city this year… McQueen becomes a part of that statistic.

Surveillance vido shows supect running away from shooting
Surveillance vido shows supect running away from shooting

The fact is in all probability this murder was the result of some longstanding gang conflict… maybe drugs… maybe something else… problems with other people… that in some ways says it all…

Too many peeps got problems with other peeps that all too often get settled at the end of a weapon…

A young man runs with a gang for whatever reason… identity… safety… being a part of something he could never have otherwise… and sometimes just because of the biggest lure of it all… status… money… maybe power of some sort… then… he finds out he’s a dad and wants it all to change… he likes being a dad… he wants maybe out of the life…

But, other peeps still in the life don’t forget and then suddenly a dad is dead in the streets…

You can’t always just walk away from your past no matter how you would like to change the way things are…

Each and every decision you make in your life in some way predicts what your future will ulitimately be…

Choose wisely…

 Too Many People

Too many people going underground,
Too many reaching for a piece of cake.
Too many people pulled and pushed around,
Too many waiting for that lucky break.

That was your first mistake,
You took your lucky break and broke it in two.
Now what can be done for you?
You broke it in two.

Too many people sharing party lines,
Too many people never sleeping late.
Too many people paying parking fines,
Too many hungry people losing weight.

That was your first mistake,
You took your lucky break and broke it in two.
Now what can be done for you?
You broke it in two.

Too many people breaching practices
Don’t let them tell you what you want to be.
Too many people holding back,
This Is crazy and maybe it’s not like me.

That was your last mistake,
I find my love awake and waiting to be.
Now what can be done for you?

She’s waiting for me.

Them good ole boys way down South…

Let me just say this… them good ole boys sure do know how to take care of one another… and… I wonder if his honor has a Stars & Bars standing next to the American flag in his federal courtroom.

Why I say all this?

Well… back a ways in April, a dude, who was a Congressional candidate just last year in East Tennessee, agreed to plead guilty to plotting an attack on residents of “Islamberg,” a community outside Hancock, New York, consisting primarily of Muslims. But, some federal judge said on June 29th that the case did not contain enough facts to really be a true threat to anyone… the agreement was tossed.

Now, I’m reading, that as of Tuesday, federal prosecutors say that Robert Doggart has been indicted on a charge of soliciting another person to burn down a mosque in that same Muslim enclave in New York.doggart8n-2-web

The new grand jury indictment accuses Doggart of a civil rights violation wherein he attempted to “solicit, command, induce and endeavor” to get somebody to torch a Muslim house of worship… a mosque… in Islamberg. The charges carry a penalty of up to 10 years in prison.

Now… what is truly amazing is that the schmuck did this veritably right out in the open… court records say that Doggart solicited others to join in his plan through Facebook posts and in telephone conversations… the Federal docs allege that Doggart wrote that “Target 3 (Islamberg) is vulnerable from many approaches and must be utterly destroyed.”

Originally, in the May agreement, a judge ordered Doggart to be set free with the following conditions… home detention, psychiatric treatment including drug testing, no firearms and post a $30,000 bond. Court records show Doggart essentially said… “Yeah sure (my lawyered up ass would be foolish to say no…).

In June, the religious organization The Muslims of America in a letter to the Feds said “We respectfully do not believe that the plea arrangement is fair, reasonable or in the interest of justice as it relates to us as victims or to society as a whole.”

Somebody must have heard the cry for justice and re-indicted Doggart…

Now… let’s see how the good ole boys do this time around with just a few more Federal eyes checking out the court room action…

Hey,Trump… someone said thanks…

Billionaire Donald Trump recently made a presidential announcement speech Tuesday, wherein he sai he was tossing his hat into the ring and running to be POTUS…

Among the things he said in his rambling talk of 30-plus minutes were…

“I will be the greatest jobs president that God ever created.”.

“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re sending people who have lots of problems (which include) drugs and being rapists.”

“I’m using my own money. I’m not using lobbyists. I’m not using donors. I don’t care. I’m really rich.”

“I like China. I just sold an apartment for $15 million to someone from China. Am I supposed to dislike them?” “Saudi Arabia without us is gone. They’re gone.”

“I will build a great, great wall on our southern border and I will make Mexico pay for that wall.”

“We have losers. We have losers. We have people that don’t have it.”

“People say you don’t like China. No, I love them.”

“I beat China all the time.”

“People say, Mr. Trump, you’re not a nice person. But actually I am.”

Now… the guy is serious about this it… and… believe it or not he’s running first and ahead of other elephant candidates right now in some polls… this is regardless how many newspapers and online media sources have ridiculed the man for what was said in his speech…

But, the one thing that really pissed off some peeps and folks were his comments about Mexicans… that Mexican immigrants were people who only bring their problems, drugs, crime and rape to America…

Most of everybody who had stuff to say were saying how dumbass and ignorant Trump was.. Macy’s, NBC and Univision cut ties with the Trump’s various money-making endeavors

That is all but one person who just happened to be of Honduran descent… America Ferrera… of Ugly Betty fame… she thanked him…

She thanked him in an open letter titled… appropriately… “Thank you, Donald Trump!” that was published by the Huffington Post and got a lot of hurrahs on social media websites.

And, I now repeat that occurrence right here and now…

“Dear Donald,

americaYou’ve said some pretty offensive things about Latino immigrants recently, and I think they’re worth addressing. Because, you know, this is the United States of America, where I have a right to speak up even if I’m not a billionaire. Isn’t that awesome?

Anyway, I heard what you said about the kind of people you think Latino immigrants are… people with problems, who bring drugs, crime and rape to America. While your comments are incredibly ignorant and racist, I don’t want to spend my time chastising you. I’ll leave that to your business partners like Univision and NBC, who have the power to scold you where it hurts. Instead, I’m writing to say thank you!

You see, what you just did with your straight talk was send more Latino voters to the polls than several registration rallies combined! Thank you for that. Here we are pounding the pavement to get American Latinos to the polls, while your tactic proves most effective. Remarks like yours will serve brilliantly to energize Latino voters and increase turnout on election day against you and any other candidate who runs on a platform of hateful rhetoric.

Do you know why that’s such a big deal, Donald? Because Latinos are the largest, youngest and fastest-growing constituency in the United States of America. That’s right! You are running for President in a country where the Latino population grew by over 49 percent from 2000-2012, while the rest of the country grew by 5.8 percent. What’s more, we are the future. The median age of the average Latino is 27 years old, compared to 42 years old for white Americans. In case you need a translation, that means there are a whole lot of Americans who are Latino and have the right to vote. And, we’re not going anywhere.

This is the America we are actually living in. I hope by now you understand that without the Latino vote, there is no chance of you ever winning this election. If you don’t believe me, you could ask President Bush or you could even ask President Obama.

You, Mr. Trump, are living in an outdated fantasy of a bigoted America. Last week, America celebrated some amazing milestones… marriage equality, universal healthcare, removing of the confederate flag… making it clear in which direction the country is moving. That is why racist remarks that play to extremists won’t change the tide, no matter how hard you try. They will only serve to rally more Latino voters to the polls. Your negativity and your poorly thought out speech ignited a fire in our community. Thank you, Mr. Trump!

Thank you for reminding us that there remains an antiquated and endangered species of bigots in this country that we must continue to combat. Thank you for reminding us to not sit complacently at home on election day, but to run to the polls and proclaim that there is no place for your brand of racial politicking in our government. Thank you for sending out the rallying cry.

You have made your thoughts on the Latino community clear and you continue to stand by them. And in return, we will do more than tweet about our indignation and beat piñatas of your likeness. We will silence you at the polls. We will vote and use our growing position in U.S. politics. Our fellow Americans who understand and value our contributions will join us. We know there is nothing that scares you more.

The truth is, Mr. Trump, that your comments mean that you fail to see that immigrants are what have made this nation. They are at the core of our ideals, and they are the foundation that keeps us afloat. No, Mr. Trump, you may not reduce us to drug dealers and rapists. We are moms and dads, sons and daughters. We are valedictorians and honor students. We are college graduates, bankers, police officers, entertainers, teachers, journalists, politicians and we are the future of America.

Thank you for helping us in our work to energize the Latino vote and to usher in our shared future! Keep it up!

Ye gods and little fishes… if’n, ya’ll can’t believe in America… then who can you believe in…

But, chew on her words… “…there are a whole lot of Americans who are Latino and have the right to vote. And, we’re not going anywhere. This is the America we are actually living in.”

And guess what, America… there are a whole lot of other folk who think just like you and we all be going to the polls, too…

So, think again all those who want to be spouting out words of derision and hate… and just remember… You don’t need a weather man to know which way the wind blows… and… Your old road is rapidly agin’, please, get out of the new one, if, you can’t lend your hand… for the times they are a-changin’

And in the end the choices you make…

Ya know sometimes peeps can do some real stupid stuff because they may have the capacity to think but they really choose not to… for instance…

In Brooklyn some cops were responding to a 911 call that shots were fired… when they got to the location they found a large group of folks setting off a bunch of fireworks…

In the process of saying “OK, people let’s stop tossing the fire crackers around and just cool it and go home…”

At least, go somewhere else and stop causing a mild riot in this neighborhood and our beat.

It was then that a dumbass decided to toss some firecrackers into the cop’ vehicle…

Now let me stop right here… considering the situation and considering that all sorts of racket was going on… what if one of them cops had thought “Jesus Cristo, some ass is firing on us” and then pulled his weapon and fired in return? Maybe either wounding someone ne or even killing them…

Whose fault would it be? The ass who threw the fireworks into the fuzzmobile or the cop for “overreacting”?

Video still of alleged cop car igniter...
Video still of alleged cop car igniter…

As it was… the officers involved had to grab fire extinguishers and put out a fire that had been started because a shit for brains idjit threw incendiary type devices into their car.

The cops busted five people for disorderly conduct but unfortunately not a jackass would be arsonist… Word was that the case was still under investigation…

So… I’m guessing someone knows who the fledging anarchist is and it will only be a matter of time before someone gives up his name and has some charges dropped in reciprocation.

The wonder of it all and the ubiquitous plea deal…

Ya think?

Still… what if one them cops got a tad jumpy and fired his weapon?

Think about it…. It’s easy to say that they are cops and have to be extra vigilant about stuff going down and make sure what’s what… but ya think it’s easy being out there? Sometimes not knowing what’s going on and may… just maybe… some nut job is doing something besides just tossing around some fireworks… maybe had a drink or three or five and decide do act the big shot and fuck with the pigs…

Ya never know how peeps be thinking until ya put yourself in their place and walk a few blocks in their shoes… And, ya never know when the tipping point comes… how things will shake out in the end because of the confluence of choices made…

Who’s laughing now?

390-cosbydocs-0707Judge Eduardo Robreno unsealed hundreds of pages of documents from former Temple University employee Andrea Constand’s sexual assault and defamation case against the sullied standup comic Bill cosby at the request of the Associated Press on Monday.

I have only one thing to say about it all… I don’t think the so-called America’s Dad is gonna come out of this feeling lucky any more…

Specifically, the court records show that he acknowledged in that he got prescriptions for Quaaludes to give women he wanted to have sex with in the 1970s.

As one lawyer for one of the woman suing Cosby said… “It brings to light Mr. Cosby’s admission that he obtained drugs to have sex (with young women) and it tramples upon his public pronouncements of ‘I’m not that kind of guy.’”

Nuff said…

  1. Joe:

Another good column. My take on the “Stars and Bars” is that different people see it in different ways. And each group is blind to what the other group sees.

But whatever those who feel the “heritage” of that flag, they have got to realize it does not convey that message to most others. Thus that flag should not be displayed on public property where it can be interpreted as promoting public policy — including things that supporters do not see it representing (such as repression and slavery). I am hopeful that those who have supported the flag are beginning to see that it does not symbolize to others what it does to them.

  2. Thanks for the link, Joe. There are many other cases where former supporters of the Stars and Bars are backing off and saying, “I didn’t realize how deeply offended many others were by its display.”

  3. So this is what the country has come to..just because some other people are offened by a certain thing, all hell breaks loose and people who believe/are proud of that “certain thing” are being forced to put their beliefs and feelings aside. They can’t feel proud any more or they’ll be called racist. I just don’t under stand.

  4. It depends on what they feel proud of. If it is the Stars and Bars you are talking about, are you proud of the institutionalized slavery it represents?

It is true that to an extent, the meaning of the Stars and Bars has been hijacked by those who are even more terrorist than those in the original rebel states. But whether right or wrong, that new meaning is now inextricably a part of its heritage. And it stands today as a symbol of inhuman treatment of humans.

You are free to believe whatever you want. Society, however, demands that we have respect for one another and failure to observe that requirement is your statement you wish to be removed from society.
