Thought I would start something new for the New Year, and start putting out a lyric or something everyday, at about 7 CST, I’m gonna throw something up on Twitter. I might have some of the other writers take a week or two every now and again (if you start seeing Nas or Frank Sinatra, chances are I’m taking a week off) So lets have fun with it, and if you missed a day, or just have no idea where the song comes from, well, here you go. As always the Twitter is @7poundbagdotcom #Lyricsoftheday
Tina Turner – Proud Mary 2/2
Thought I would kick off February with some Black Artists, and starting us off is Tina Turner- whom I love. Even going back to her Ike and Tina days, she’s always brought power to the mic. I hate Proud Mary when I used to go Karaoke. Only Tina does it justice.
In a cafe or sometimes on a crowded street
I’ve been near you, but you never noticed me
My cherie amour, won’t you tell me, how could you ignore
That behind that little smile I wore
How I wish that you were mine
Stevie Wonder – My Cherie Amour 2/3
I’ve started to do something different, I’m limited on twitter to 140 characters, so I’m going to post the entire stanza here on the wrapup. Stevie Wonder has a ton of great songs, but after the power of the TINA, thought I would take it down a bit.
Marvin Gaye – Lets get it on 2/4
So I bought you a rose on the way home from work
To open the door to a heart that I hurt
And I hope you notice this look in my eyes
‘Cause I’m gonna make things right for the rest of your life, rest of your life
Luther Vandross – Buy Me A Rose 2/5
These two men can always get the soul moving. Marvin Gaye is to me, better than Barry White, and No, I didn’t go with “Sexual Healing”. Stolen from us right when he was hitting his popular peak, you really need to kill some time with Marvin. If I have to talk about Luther, then you just need to stop. Take what I said about Marvin, and square it. This is not my favorite Luther song, and I’ve got plans for that one.
Aretha Franklin – Son Of A Preacher Man 2/6
No, I didn’t go with Respect, or Think, I think this is my favorite Aretha song. Man, how would you like to hit a time machine to about 1985 and get her and Tina on a dual set- much like Elton John and Billy Joel did the Piano Men tour? Oh Shit, I just lost all my street cred, didn’t I? Let’s move on.
Other arms reach out to me
Other eyes smile tenderly
Still in peaceful dreams I see
The road leads back to you
Ray Charles – Georgia On My Mind 2/7
Is there another Ray Charles song? Hell Yes. But I went with Georgia, just because I love this song.
Fightin’ back revenge you’ve got you’re face to the ground
You make excuses for the madness you’ve been hangin’ around
You built a house up in the trees so you could see everyone
You set the clock and had a run, you set the clock and had a run
Cage The Elephant – James Brown 2/8
James Brown deserves his own week, but I went with Cage here. If all you remember is Brown being goofy in Rocky IV or Eddie Murphy’s James Brown Hottub, then do me a favor and pop this song in for a bit. You’ll thank me.
Next week, Its Jackson Week! You knew it was going to happen. Then the week after that, we have the Lady Jane Guest DJ!
