It’s a crazy mixed up topsy turvy world and sometimes I just don’t know where I stand. All I wanna say is stop it all… stop hating… stop it… and… why can’t we just give peace a chance? I mean… really? Why can’t we? When it all comes down to it… What’s it all about… why do the Charlies have to happen? I just don’t understand why folks get to the point where they need to kill to prove their point. What is that point, exactly? Anybody know? Tell me if you do… I don’t undestand killing…
I’m back again and to use a line or two from Dylan… that’s as in Zimmerman, and, not as in Thomas… disappearin’ through the smoke rings of my mind, down the foggy ruins of time; its time for another topsy turvy vison of the week through my WTF mind…
When do we stop killing in God’s name?
The bible is a storybook… albeit a very fine and mostly good storybook that many of us in the western world take as the basis and foundation of our belief system… in particular our religious beliefs.
Big breaking news!!! I do not take the words of the bible literally…
I have only read small smatterings of the Jewish books of faith… mostly from the Torah… as well as from the Muslim book of faith… the Quran… but I know there are more similarities between those books and the bible than most peeps would ever think. But, these books were written when most people in the world had neither the ability to read or to write.
I am not a student of world history to the degree that I can tell ya’ll how laws and the rules of society came to be but I do believe that the bible was created as a story of how man came to be and then how man should live his life so that society could exist with some semblance of order. In short… it is a rule book presented in storybook form… or, if, you would, tales or sagas of trials and tribulations… about how mere mortals overcame all odds, through God’s grace, to forge how we should conduct ourselves amongst other folks… and… from certain folks’ perspectives including the chosen of the world as well as the heathens of the world.
I am not even going to get into any discussion of who wrote what or why it was wrote… I just know the book we call the bible was written and developed over time way back when until it came to be what it is now.
Now… let me get this right up front… I was raised in the Catholic faith… I went to a Catholic kindergarten… a Catholic grammar school (grades 1 through 8)… then a Catholic high school…
During that education I have had the words of the bible read to me and read by me. And, I ain’t no expert, but, I do know that book called the bible somewhat well, and, I know it enough to draw some conclusions… The biggest one is this… Jesus… God… don’t like killing no matter what the reason’s for…
Now, all of this may fly in the face of that image of the bible’s avenging god but understand this… man back when he wrote those words in the bible lived in a much different world… and the world has since changed. If, you take the bible as something that is to be interpreted strictly then the world view you will have is going to be a very narrow and limited world according to man’s interpretation. Understand this, man here is not meant as another word for humanity but as male meaning not female
I believe as the world has evolved, so has society… maybe not as much as I would have hoped we would have gotten in the 10,000 years or so that folks has been in communion with one another but none the less it has evolved.
So when do evolve into a further along stage and we finally stop killing in God’s name?
The Spanish inquisition… killing more infidels.
The Irish troubles… Catholics killing Protestants…
Today look around… the middle east is racked with all kinds of murderous troubles and its all supposed to be about God… and the irony of it all is not only is the so-called Muslim God opposed to the Christian God, and even the Jewish God, but even between Muslims there is a my God against your God sorta thign going on.
All about religion and beliefs… all about who’s right and who’s wrong and who’s God will rule the earth?
Simply put… Give me a freaking god damn break… it’s never been about God or religion no matter what anyone thinks. Yeah, they may have that propagandist thought implanted within their feeble little brains when they go shouting “go with god” before marching off to war or whatever other phrase may be used… now we hear “God is great” or “Allah Akbar”… but… that’s not why they kill… not the real reason… its only why they think they are killing. The real reason is because they… or someone who is in charge of they… wants to control something that someone else has control over. its called wealth in one form or another.
So, when do we stop killing in God’s name? When do we stop disrespecting each other to the degree that we feel the need to be killing one another? When does all the terror stop?
Even the terror in our cities right here in America… when will there no longer be blood on the streets of New Haven…
(Authors note: I am not a Catholic now… I am not anything at all now, except, a person who can think for himself, and, if, he has any faith in anything it’s personal and private and between me whatever God I believe in and myself…)
1A) Apologies to Burt Bacharach and Hal David
What’s it all about, Charlie
Is it just for the moment we live
Whats it all about
When you sort it out, Charlie
Are we meant to take more than we give
Or are we meant to be kind
And if only fools are kind, Charlie
Then I guess it is wise to be cruel
And if life belongs only to the strong, Charlie
What will you lend on an old golden ruler
As sure as I believe theres a Heaven above, Charlie
I know there’s something much more
Something even non-believers can believe in
I believe in love, Charlie
Without true love we just exist, Charlie
Until you find the love you’ve missed you’re nothing, Charlie
When you walk let your heart lead the way
And you’ll find love any day Charlie, Charlie, Charlie

2) Ireland will hold a referendum on same sex marriage in May.
According to the Belfast Telegraph, Father Martin Dolan has been a priest at the Church of St Nicholas of Myra in Dublin for 15 years. On Saturday (1/9) while celebrating Mass he called on his congregation to support same sex marriage in the upcoming referendum. He also told his congregation: “I’m gay myself.”
The Telegraph reports that his admission was met by applause and a standing ovation from his proud parishioners. The newspaper quoted one parishioner who said: “We are all very proud of Father Martin. Because he has admitted that he is gay he doesn’t change the person that he was before it.”
It’s all well and good that this priest has come out and said he is gay… but… I just wanna ask… does it really matter if he is, or, if he is not? The reason I ask is… Catholic priests take a vow of celibacy. Sooo…. I mean seeing that he has to abstain from sex anyway does it matter if he is gay or hetro?
I would think, that, if, he didn’t abstain from sex, then, being gay would be small potatoes as far as the church was concerned. Becasue, him having sex, of any type, would be committing one hell of a humongous and exceedingly grievous mortal sin in the eyes of the Catholic church right from the get go. I mean, big time violation of Church vows and all that.
No? Maybe kinda sorta?
(FYI: The church doesn’t formally ban gays from the priesthood, and, Pope Francis famously addressed the question of homosexuality in the priesthood in 2013, saying in Italian: “Who am I to judge a gay person of goodwill who seeks the Lord? You can’t marginalize these people.”)
3) I just wanna say… the internet is racist.
Huh?! Why I say that, you ask?
Besides writing this column, and random other articles, for this website, I also contribute to and edit the weekly column MLBRT… aka MLB Round Table. Not that long ago one of the contributors was on vacation and instead of not including him and maybe having peeps say “Hey, what happened to Earl? He a gone guy or sumpin?”, I decided I would leave his little icon that I include with the contributor’s comments and post this statement: “Earl is on vacation”. Along with that I also decided I would include some type of picture. So, my brain engaged it’s grey matter and went into think mode and I said “Eureka!” I know… I’ll find some picture of a guy sitting in a chair on a beach facing the ocean with a drink in his hand. All anyone would see is just his arm holding rum-concotion umbrealla type of drink.
Simple task… eh??? Not a chance.
Oh, I found plenty of the type of pictures just like I described… all sorts of pictures holding all sorts of drinks and stuff… one problem. I wanted a black person sitting in that chair with a black arm holding that umbrella-type drink. See… Earl is black. I thought it would disrespetful to show anything but a black arm.
I searched high and low and nary one damn black arm could I find. I typed in various types of words into my search engine … no black people sitting in chairs facing oceans with an arm extended holding a drink.
So says I.. “Self… DOHHH! Just type in black man sitting on beach with drink.”
I got lots of black people… none stting in a chair, arm extended holding drinks. Lots of black folks having sex however.
So, let me get his straight… according to my internet search engine… there are no available pictures of black people sitting at beaches arm extended holding drinks BUT there are lots of pictures available of black peole having sex if I type in the same request and include the words “black man”?
That, people, is racist, if, you ask me.
4) On January 6, there was a bombing at a NAACP office in Colorado Springs…
Ya know how I found out about it? Someone posted the news on Facebook. Until that moment I had neither read nor heard anything about it. I think someone bombing an NAACP office anywhere is news that should be put out there. If not front page news… maybe because of some stuff like demonstrations against police violence towards black folks, or two cops being murdered in NYC or a terrorist bombing in Paris at magazine offices… then certainly second or third page news with… oh… say about 6 or 7 column inches or so. No?
But, nope, nada, not a thing, until I saw someone’s post on Facebook.
Now on Tuesday, I finally saw something about the bombing… buried on about page 15 or 20 or something like that… about 1 or maybe 2 column inches if we be lucky.
It said Authorities released a sketch of the man that they believed detonated a bomb at an NAACP office in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The drawing showed a bald white man wearing sunglasses.
The FBI and federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are offering a $10,000 reward for information on the Tuesday blast outside the civil rights organization’s chapter office. Blah, blah, blah, etc… etc…
Now, I got a big problem with this… When is it that bombings that occur at a site of the nation’s oldest civil rights organization is no longer news? Big news?
Why is it okay for mainstream media to obviously just go… “Oh, some bomb went off at some NAACP office somewhere… ho hum… what else is going on in the world?”
Just wanna know when that happened… that blasé approach to someone trying to blow up a place where black people tend to congregate.
Just so ya’ll know and as a public service… here’s the skinny…
An explosion occurred outside a building housing the local NAACP office in Colorado Springs. A white man was seen walking from the scene and got into a pickup truck and drove away. The FBI released this statement on January 7th : “A potential person of interest in this investigation is a Caucasian male, approximately 40 years of age, and balding. He may be driving a 2000 or older model dirty, white pickup truck with paneling, a dark colored bed liner, open tailgate, and a missing or covered license plate.”
Gene Southerland, the building’s longtime owner and a Lifetime NAACP member, and chapter president, Henry Allen said in interviews that they would “not be deterred” from conducting any activities that the NAACP deems as appropriate and necessary. In fact, they recently participated in a rally held on the building’s parking lot in regards to what went down with police and Michael Brown in Ferguson. And, one article I eventually uncovered said that activity seemed to of pissed off “… some of the professed Ku Klux Klan members in the city who, in recent years, got heat from some residents for circulating threatening, racist flyers.”
Listen up… folks… if someone goes around bombing NAACP offices anywhere then that’s news and needs to be talked about and in a big way. It’s no small middle of the paper; buried next to the obituaries type of news.
One more time, racism is not ok. Killing folks is not okay.
I recently read in AARP’s magazine that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was asked this question… “Why do you think today’s athletes won’t engage in greater social causes the way you, Jim Brown, Muhammad Ali and other black athletes once did?”
He said… “Bringing the Jim Crow era to an end was very important for most black Americans. It was a mission I inherited. That debate is over. The civil rights aspect of it… at least on the legal books… has been settled. Now (my emphasis) we have to make it a reality in our nation.”
Just because it is illegal to go around bombing and hanging black folks don’t mean it still won’t happen. There is still a lot of work to be done.
We can’t make it a reality if main stream media refuses to acknowledge incidents of overt racism, and, if, they do acknowledge it, they then simply relegates it as back page insignificant news filler stuff.
Racist don’t rest and neither should, or can, we.
Yeah, it’s good that peeps are marching in the streets again, but, ya can’t just march just for the latest cause célèbre, and, then, go back into your cozy cubbies. It’s gotta be an everyday vigilance, and, it’s the responsibility of the news media to help to keep us all aware. Believe it or not, putting out the news ain’t just about selling papers; it’s about telling the truth, too.
Or, did mainstream media forget that along the way?
5) Saw this recently in the news streams on the internet… “A New Jersey pastor punched a youth in the chest as hard as he could for “not taking the Lord serious,” he told his congregation.”
Seems a so-called Pastor Eric Dammann of the Bible Baptist Church tells a church congregation that he slugged a “smart aleck” named Ben who was “trying to push (his) buttons” at a youth group meeting in Calgary 13 years ago. So he walked over to the kid and “… and went, Bam! Punched him in the chest as hard as I could. I crumpled the kid. I just crumpled him. Then I leaned over and said, ‘Ben, when are you going to stop playing games with God?’ I led that man to the Lord right there.”
Dammann’s July sermon was first posted by the Hasbrouck Heights’ church but was deleted.
However… YouTube to the rescue… someone else has a copy of the sermon and the YouTube video of the speech has garnered nearly 1.2 million views since it was posted in December.
Dammann is now telling media sources that he looks back on the “inexcusable” altercation with “deep sorrow,” and then he adds… the story was taken out of context.
How in the hell someone… especially a freaking damn so-called man of the cloth, of God… punching some child in the chest taking something out of context. Can ya’ll riddle me that? Mr Highfaluting holier than thou Mr. man of God bully? Can you please tell me how it was taken out of context?
Look it… I am tired of peeps using these damn half assed and halfhearted “Sorrys” and “Excuses”, and, then saying stuff like “… it was taken out of context.” Especially when there is “film at eleven” type stuff that shows you telling what went down.
I have said this before but it bears repeating now…
This is what I want… if, someone is truly sorry and truly believes they did something wrong and is not just saying sorry because they think that’s what gonna feed the bulldog… then this is how it needs to be done… I’m sorry. I was wrong. It will never happen again.
And then go freaking out and make sure it is so.
6) And then there was this news… “A Maryland casino kicked out a woman for breastfeeding in the lobby.”
Alanna Panas said she fed her 7-week-old daughter, Lilly, after her own mom dropped the newborn off for lunch at the Casino at Ocean Downs January 3. Panas said she had hoped to feed the fussy infant in her but because it was raining, she was forced to soothe the crying baby in the empty lobby.
At that point, she said, casino security told her to leave because the baby was underage and that her baby was a security threat. She added… “But, I didn’t have my baby on the casino floor. Lilly and I were in the corner of the lobby.”
And, yep… Panas spread her story online, and moms from all over the place chimed in with support and said that they, too, have been discriminated against for breastfeeding.
First… Just so happens that Maryland law allows women to breast-feed in public and private locations.
Second… if, what Panas says is true, then, on what grounds does security think they can tell her to go pound sand and get the hell out?
Third… as far as that security threat shit… how in the hell can a naked breast being fed into a baby’s mouth in any shape, way or form be construed as being a threat to anyone’s security? HUH?!
The casino after all the hoo-hah went sort into the internet stratosphere level posted an apology on Facebook… “Casino at Ocean Downs strives to make our guests’ experiences enjoyable, and if any member of our team acted in a manner that did not promote that experience, we apologize.”
Yeah… another half assed; half hearted “We are sorry” apology.
Panas replies… “They just basically said it was Lilly and my fault. My baby and I did nothing wrong. I just want a sincere apology for the way we were treated.”
Don’t seem like that much of a big request, or problem, do it? So, Casino at Ocean Downs… we be waiting… show some sincerity… or, at least more than you have so far… comp her a dinner for two and maybe a show. Show some respect… and… above all follow the law.
7) Former big-league ace Curt Schilling thinks there’s a possible non-baseball explanation for his topping out at 39.2 percent after three years on the BBWAA Hall of Fame ballot. The reason? Politics.
Schilling intimates that a case could be made that his statistics are comparable to those of recently elected John Smoltz. However, the Braves former legend got 240 more votes, and, therefore the requisite percentage that entitled him to enshrinement into Baseball’s Hall of Fame. Schilling said Smoltz deserves enshrinement, but he also said that Smoltz’s political views are more consistent with many media members.
In his own words… “I think he got in because of [Greg] Maddux and [Tom] Glavine. I think the fact that they won 14 straight pennants. I think his ‘Swiss army knife versatility,’ which somebody said yesterday, I think he got a lot of accolades for that, I think he got a lot of recognition for that. He’s a Hall of Famer. And, I think the other big thing is that I think he’s a Democrat and so I know that, as a Republican, that there’s some people that really don’t like that.”
Schilling said there’s no question that he would have received more votes had he been more mainstream in his beliefs and less outspoken and controversial.
Yeah… Schilling is a known, and, by his own admission, proud conservative, and, he has been outspoken in his support for Republican candidates. And… he is known for making some… ahem… controversial comments on the internet. But, if, that alone could keep a man out of the Hall then we need to go back in and start weeding out and kicking out a lot of other folks who obviously don’t belong in there based on their political views… say Jim Bunning or Ty Cobb or George Brett, or, ya know, probably the majority of players that are in the Hall that tend to be conservative leaning. I mean ain’t it all about mom, apple pie and baseball… everyone’s good old American dream? How much more conservative can ya get? Yeah, I’m starting to get a tad sarcatic but ya’ll get my point here?
Politics, and being a freaking conservative, has nothing to do with Schilling not beign elected. It’s real simple… the BBWAA, for whatever reason or reeasons, just don’t think that old Curt has the right baseball stuff that deserves him to be enshriened into tthe Hall.
End of story… just another dumb ass comment from dumb ass Mr. Schilling, if, ya want my way of thinking.
But it’s not the end of the story… right… another sort of half assed excuse coming right up…
Since the story blew up, and, since lots of folks sorta started making him look the fool… Schilling used the old “Rush Limbaugh Excuse” and said, “It was a joke people! Don’t you guys know ANYTHING about humor? Sometimes I like to joke. If you don’t get it, you are just dumb!”
But, Johnny on the spot, Keith Olberamnn, takes Schilling to task by saying that in his decades covering baseball and other sports, the vast majority of athletes he’s come across have been conservative. Olbermann’s logic? Their conservative bent comes from their desire to make as much money as they can and then to keep as much of that money as they can rather than pay something called taxes. Seems most ball players like the idea of a flat tax as opposed to he rich getting taxed more than the poor. Damn! who knew or even thought?
Then old Keith decided to let his viewers decide for themselves if Schilling was joiking or not by simply going to the video tape… he played the clip in its entirety.
Now, ya wanna know the real kicker to all of this? John Smoltz is anything but a liberal…
Want proof? Found this little news bite… “In 2006 Smoltz publicly campaigned for Ralph Reed. Reed was in the republican primary for the office of Georgia Lieutenant Governor. If Reed’s name sounds familiar it is because he was the original executive director of The Christian Coalition, a family-values based conservative political action group that was formed in the 1990’s. A public endorsement of Reed would be a very odd thing for a Democrat (or even a moderate Republican) to do.”
Now is this, finally, the end of the story? Probably not, but, it is for me.
Curt ya didn’t get elected because not enough voters think you deserve to be elected. So STFU already.. Naw… go on and be as addle brained as you want. Tis your right, and, I shouldn’t try and stifle you or deny you that right.
Just keep opening your yap and doing your thing… keep on keeping on, buddy boy.
“Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.” Abraham Lincoln
8) Then there’s this early candidate for the dumbass of the year award… seems this jerk got busted for trying to sell a handgun to an undercover officer. But, after he was taken into custody, Evansville (Indiana) cops found his cell phone had video that showed a baby playing with a handgun, at times putting the muzzle into her mouth.
Michael Barnes, 19, was arrested Saturday along with the 1-year-old’s mother, Toni Wilson, 22, and charged with neglect, criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon and allowing a child to possess a firearm.
News reports said that both “parents” can be heard encouraging the child to say “Pow” and “Bang” as she points the gun and then puts it in her mouth.
The so-called mom says the gun is “just” a pellet gun.
Police said it was a .40-caliber handgun.
And, though reports say the magazine was removed from the weapon, with these dumabasses involved, ya think there could have been a bullet left in the chamber?
Hopefully, that baby is now with somebody who has a tad more responsibility.
9) From the NYDN… Occupational therapist Debra Fisher, 55, of Public School 333, made headlines in October when she was suspended from her job over creating a fund-raising program to help her eighth-grade student Aaron Philip, 13.
Seems Fisher, a nine-year veteran of city classrooms, did a fundraiser to help Aaron create a book and video animation to help other kids with special needs… a project that was endorsed by and aided by PS 333 officials.
But when an unrelated probe by Education Department officials discovered some of Fisher’s emails to co-workers discussing the project… Whammo! They suspended her for using school time for unofficial purposes.
Fisher has since returned to her job… after a six-week suspension and minus the corresponding pay. She, however, has now had legal papers (aided free of charge by lawyers from the Cahill & Reinde law firm) filed by an attorney on her behalf that argues that she got help from PS 333 officials to conduct a fundraiser and that she should not have been suspended or denied any pay. Fisher is asking that she get back about $5,000 in pay and to have a disciplinary letter removed from her permanent file.
Really… for emails? That means just about anyone reading this damn column should now be suspended from their jobs and denied pay. I’m gonna bet almost all you guys and gals been sending some type of personal email in one form or another. Shame on ya’ll.
And, the kicker is it sounds like there is no argument she had school officials support. So, why is she the only get kicked in the ass here.
Fix it and settle the case already.
Talk about leaders in the clubhouse for dumbass stuff. Sheeeshhhh….
10) Roaming around the internet I find stuff that just makes me take pause and smile.. here are two of them…
This weeks gratuitous pictures…
Raffaella Modugno (26) is an Italian model…
And, another thousand word…
