You may remember that we don’t have cable or satellite at our house, just over-the-air-free-TV. One of the area stations has dedicated a channel for weather when you want it along with sports scores, stock reports and headlines in a scroll at the bottom of the page. As it sometimes happens, something will catch your eye that makes you say What did that say? So you wait for it to come around again but it never does. Does that happen to you when you watch CNN, FOXNews or MSNBC?
Anyway, I saw or thought I saw ‘new OJ Simpson case information.’ I immediately thought Wow, even though he was tried and found not guilty has some retired cold case detective been looking into the Nicole Brown Simpson-Ron Goldman double homicide and found something important? So I did what anyone with an internet connection would do and Googled it. Turns out I couldn’t be more wrong if I had tried. Here’s the deal….
Ryan Murphy, the producer of ‘Glee’ and his new miniseries to air on FX ‘American Crime Story: The People v OJ Simpson’ has signed John Travolta to play defense attorney Robert Shapiro, along with David Schwimmer of Friends fame to play Robert Kardashian, Sarah Paulson will play prosecutor Marcia Clark, and Cuba Gooding, Jr has the role of OJ Simpson. The focus of the miniseries will be to show the case/trial through the eyes of the defense team aka The Dream Team. Having seen the verdict in real time I don’t think David Schwimmer will be able to pull off the stunned look of naked shock I saw on the face of Robert Kardashian when the clerk read the not guilty verdict.
Probably won’t matter, though. Kids today think Paul McCartney is just some old dude getting a career boost by Kanye. They never heard Ebony and Ivory by Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson either, I bet.
Wonder if they even know who OJ Simpson is.
Former Alaska Governor and Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin set the internet on fire when she posted a picture on her Facebook wall of her special needs son Trig standing on what turned out to be his service dog, Jill Hadassah. Seems Trig wanted to help his Mom wash the dishes but couldn’t reach the sink and wasn’t having any luck getting his point across to Mom. So what he did was a bit startling for a child with Down Syndrome. He thought of a way to solve his problem and it involved standing on his service dog. Well, you can imagine the comment storm that came her way from normal folks to PETA about cruelty to animals, and her response when she feels under attack is to attack back. Instead of saying this type of cognitive thinking is rare in Downs kids and is to be celebrated when it occurs, she made the statement that they didn’t eat the dog like they do in Africa….which I took as another dig at our President. Look, if the dog was in distress she wouldn’t just be lying there with the kid on her back….she’d get up and move. TIME Magazine has a good article by Steven Friess titled “What Parents of Down Syndrome Kids Get About Sarah Palin That Others Don’t.”
But on the subject of the eating of dogs in Africa….maybe, if they’re really hungry and can find one, BUT, when it comes to dogs as food she’s looking at the wrong continent.
My Great-Uncle Karl was career military. He fought in WWII and Korea. After that war his unit stayed behind and he commissioned a Korean artist to paint portraits of his family members from photographs. His parents, brothers, sisters, their spouses, their pets, my parents, my maternal grandparents and me as an infant. The artist did beautiful work and the framed paintings hung on the walls in my Great-grandparents home until their deaths. The only sore spot Great-Uncle Karl had with the artist was the painting he did of my Great-Aunt’s Boston Terrier named Boots. In the photograph, Boots was sitting on a pillow on the sofa but in the painting he was sitting on the kitchen table surrounded by flour, milk, eggs and cooking utensils. Needless to say the inappropriate images were covered up before the painting was sent home, but in Korea, dogs are on the menu.
Hey Jim Mora, is it okay to talk about the playoffs? I’ll take that silence for yes.
Well, the eight playoff teams are now down to four. New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers. And guess who among the 7poundbag.com contributors stands alone at 4-0 this week? C’mon, guess. IT’S ME! That’s right, me, not such an idiotic cow now, eh?
Can the Patriots beat the Colts next week? Absolutely. Can the Seahawks beat the Packers? Playing at CenturyLink Field in Seattle….I don’t doubt it. Don’t want them to win and go to the Super Bowl but they’ll be hard to beat at home.
Thanks for reading Musings From the Bench 1/12 Edition. Until next time.
