When the Los Angeles Lakers acquired big man Tarick Black off waivers on December 29th it didn’t exactly send shock waves through the NBA. However, Black turned in a solid performance Friday in the Lakers 101-84 win over the visiting Orlando Magic.
He scored 10 of his 14 points (on four-of-four shooting and was six-of-seven on free throws) in the final quarter as LA (12-25, 6-12 at home) outscored Orlando, 28-17, breaking open a 73-67 advantage after three quarters. He also grabbed nine rebounds, and had one block in just 17 minutes after sitting out the entire first half.
And the rookie thought the win was due to an increased effort in cleaning the glass. The Lakers out-rebounded their opponent, 60-36 on Friday night.
“We had everybody hitting the boards today, and it’s contagious on this team,” Black told the Associated Press after the game.
His defense was impressive, the Magic (dropped to 13-26, 9-14 on the road) didn’t drive much when he was in the game. Black’s presence in the paint was very impressive and helped break open a game, along with his offense. And he was going against one of the best young centers in the game, Nikola Vucevic.
Black started 12 games for the Rockets while Dwight Howard was out with injuries earlier this season, he averaged 4.2 points and 5.1 rebounds.
Kobe Bryant sat out his fourth game of the season and Los Angeles didn’t miss him much as six players scored in double figures, led by Jeremy Lin’s game-high 18 points. Lin also dished out six assists, snagged four steals, and had 2 blocks (one on 7-foot center Dewayne Dedmon in the first quarter).
Ryan Kelly added 13 points and eight rebounds, Carlos Boozer continued his inspired play off the bench with 12 points and 14 rebounds in just 17 minutes, Jordan Hill had 11 points and nine rebounds, and Ed Davis scored 10 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and registered three blocks.
Nick Young has battled knee issues and it showed against Orlando as he scored just nine points on two of 13 shooting from the field (missing all six of his three-pointers). He’s in a shooting slump lately, making just 24.5% of his field goal attempts the last four games, dropping his FG percentage to 37.8% on the season.
Victor Oladipo led the visitors with 17 points, Tobias Harris had 15 points, Vucevic added 14 points and 11 rebounds.
