Magic Turtle: I Dreamed I Saw Charlie Hebdo Last Night

‘T’would be best to sing the following to “I dreamed I saw Joe Hill last night . . .” But if you don’t know the song or are anti-union, just reciting the poem will do.

I dreamed I saw Charlie Hebdo last night
Alive as you and me.
But Charlie you are 12 writers dead.
“I never died,” said he.

I saw him standing by my bed
And smiling with his eyes.
He said, “What they forgot to kill
Went on to satirize.”

“The terrorists got you, Charlie.
They shot you, Charlie,” said I.
“Takes more than guns to kill a thought.”
Says Charlie, “I didn’t die.”

“From Paris out to London town
And to New Dehli and Cairo.
Where satirists write, and speak, and draw,”
Says he, “You’ll find Charlie Hebdo.”

I dreamed I saw Charlie Hebdo last night
Alive as you and me.
But Charlie you are 12 writers dead.
“I never died,” said he.

About Appleseed 20 Articles
I was born in 1937 and have been the subject of controversy in other ways as well. I dreamed of becoming a hermit when I grew up, but social issues which needed attention kept getting in my way. So eventually I became an activist hermit. My interests include mathematics (including statistics and computer science) and also range from history to sports (particularly ice hockey) to philosophy to narrative fiction (particularly science fiction) to music.

  1. Monkey house? It’s more like a Wolverine’s den. But then I have survived the ravages of the wild Buckeye, so it should not be a problem.
