The Raiders need to be working the phones

Oakland RaidersBen Tate and LeGarrette Blount were released by the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers this week.

The Oakland Raiders are averaging 63 yards per game, dead last in the NFL. They are averaging 3.4 yards per carry, 29th. Oakland has two touchdowns on the ground, dead last yet again. The running game sucks and Maurice Jones-Drew (the only move to bolster the running attack) has been a huge bust. His 2.1ypc average is beyond pathetic and his 8.8ypg has been equally abysmal. They are so bad they are only averaging 18 carries a game, last place again by over 30 attempts.

General Manager Reggie McKenzie needs to be working the phones to see if Tate or Blount is interested in coming to Oakland for a visit. Blount, 27, might be better suited to the offense. His bruising style will be a nice change of pace to McFadden’s shiftiness and speed.

He averaged 24.2 yards per game for the Steelers (4.1 yards per carry) and two TD’s. His best season was his rookie year with Tampa Bay in 2010 (77.5ypg, 5ypc, and six TD’s), but last season he averaged 5ypc and ran for a career-high seven TD’s with the New England Patriots.Ben Tate

Tate, 26, made six starts (in eight games) and averaged 41.6ypg, but just 3.1 yards per carry and four TD’s. He was a prized free agent pickup from the Houston Texans in the offseason but ultimately lost his job to Isaiah Crowell. Cleveland also has rookie Terrance West so Tate became expendable.

Release MJD and sign one of these guys to come in and help rookie Derek Carr so he isn’t at such a disadvantage having to throw so much.

Big time sports fan of the Lakers, Raiders, Angels and Dodgers. From 1990-1995, I worked at the Glendale News-Press and I had a blast. I covered mainly high school sporting events and Glendale Community College athletic events, but also attended Dodgers, Raiders, and Rams games. I also write for Joel Huerto (former co-writer and editor at the GNP) at I watch a lot of sports on TV (basketball, football, usually just postseason MLB) and UFC.

  1. If Tate was smart, he’d go back to the Texans. Alfred Blue just had a great game, but with Foster constantly hurt and the Texans still committed to running the ball under a new head coach, it just seems like a good fit to bring Tate back for depth.

Blount? Personally I wouldn’t touch him with a 10 foot pole since he wore out welcome with the Bucs, Pats, and now the Steelers but he does bring a dimension to the Raiders that they don’t have in Jones-Drew or McFadden.

  2. Well I don’t know if the Raiders “worked the phones” or not but Tate was claimed off waivers by the Vikings and reports are Blount is headed back to New England. Why? I don’t know considering they have Gray, and Vereen is back from IR. I guess depth ain’t a bad thing but Blount likely won’t see too many carries there.
