Musings From the Bench

musings from the bench-2I rarely watch the morning news shows, mainly because I’m still sleeping while they’re on the air. But Thursday morning, June 5th, I woke early and switched on Good Morning America.

They had a live performance by Josh Turner a youtube sensation who sounds remarkably like Paul Simon. For those not knowing who Paul Simon is, he was part of the duo Simon and Garfunkel back in the 1960s/1970s who then went out on his own. Anyway, to prove to the viewers at home just how much Josh sounds like Paul they played a recording of Paul performing his hit “Graceland”, stopped it and Josh took over. It was hard to tell just where Paul stopped and Josh began.

For the time being the 21-year old Butler University student is content with his studies and playing in a band now and then when his friends are in town. Besides playing the guitar and singing, he’s also got skills with the banjo, mandolin, bass and percussion. Josh Turner

The last youtube sensation became a big star but was too immature at the time (and imo still is) to really get a handle on his fame and fortune, and now with reports of his behavior overtaking everything else he’s done, well, I’d say his career is just about over. Not sure what Justin Bieber can do to turn things around now that ‘the excrement is making physical contact with a hydro-electric powered oscillating air current distribution device’, but I’d say he better hire the best public relations firm money can buy or he’s toxic toast.

Good luck Josh in whatever musical path you decide to take. You’ve got your feet on the ground and a good head on your shoulders. I predict they’ll take you far.

The writer of the Wednesday WTF blog touched on the story of two young female cousins in India who were gang-raped and hanged. I would like to expand on that, but first—–

pedophile_stacey_ramboldBILLINGS, MONTANA–Stacey Rambold was a 47-year old high school business and technology teacher who had been warned before about his inappropriate behavior towards female students in his classroom. But that didn’t stop him from acting on his impulse to rape 14-year old Cherice 3 different times. Once in his marital home (he had been divorced and remarried), in his car and in his office in 2007. It wasn’t until Cherice could work up the courage in 2008 to tell a church group leader what happened to her and the church leader told Cherice’s mother who in turn called police. Once the Billings PD started their investigation, Mr. Rambold was placed on paid leave but resigned his teaching position In July of ’08 and surrendered his Montana teaching certificate. On October 31, 2008 he was charged with three counts of felony sexual intercourse without consent, pleaded not guilty 10 days later and was released on a $25,000 bond thereby remaining free until the trial. In the meantime, things didn’t get any better for Cherice. When her classmates found out about everything, she was bullied, she was shunned and on February 6, 2010 just days away from her 17th birthday, she committed suicide.

Mr. Rambold, in a deferred prosecution agreement, admitted to performing oral sex on Cherice and acknowledged that she was incapable of consent because she was only 14 at the time while the age of consent in Montana is 16.As long as Mr. Rambold lived up to his part of the agreement for three years the criminal case would be dismissed. All he had to do was have no contact with children including his own unless supervised and complete a sex offender treatment program which usually lasts for three years. Well, Mr. Rambold being Mr. Rambold he couldn’t live up to his bargain and he was brought before Judge G. Todd Baugh.

The Judge listened to both attorneys, watched the videotaped deposition of the now deceased victim and actually said, “Cherice seemed older than her chronological age.” and  that she was “as much in control of the situation” as Rambold. As the Judge passed sentence he agreed with Defense Attorney Jay Lansing that in losing his job, his wife, his house and his teaching certificate, Mr. Rambold had suffered enough and sentenced him to 30 days in jail. That’s right…..30 days in jail. judge

Well the good citizens of Billings, Montana were outraged and called for Judge Baugh to resign his judgeship and for Mr. Rambold to receive a more fitting sentence for his crime. The Judge tried to explain his decision by stating that it wasn’t as if Mr. Rambold forcibly raped Cherice and the 30 days seemed appropriate. The Judge has since said he’s going to retire at the end of this year, 2014, but it has nothing to do with this case. And it looks like Mr. Rambold will be given a much more appropriate sentence by another Judge sometime in the near future.

This isn’t the first time the victim was blamed for the crime but I hope to Christ it’s the last in this country. In my opinion, Mr. Rambold is no better than Jerry Sandusky or those pedophile Priests. STOP BLAMING THE VICTIM!

malaysian momIn another case of rape, this time in Malaysia, a rape victim’s mother caned one of the men responsible for the rape of her 13-year old daughter while other people looked on. In fact, some of the people helped tie the man’s hands behind his back and pulled down his pants so the Mother could beat his butt (and whatever else she could reach) with a branch. The man required hospital treatment after the attack. Turns out while Mom was beating one rapist another mob of villagers was beating the other man who took part. Now Mom is looking at charges for the caning as well as others in the crowd. And the two men who raped her daughter? They will be tried and if found guilty, you guessed it, they will be caned as punishment.

This one out of India makes me madder than a wet hen. Two girls–cousins–one 14, the other 15, live in an area of India that is so poor there are no toilets so when nature calls everyone has to find a bush or something so they can relieve themselves with some type of privacy. Well, when these two girls were answering nature’s call they were attacked by 3 men. They were repeatedly raped and then hanged from a mango tree.

After a few hours the father of one of the girls got worried enough to go to the police station and report the girls as missing. What he was told by the cops taking the report was ” the girls were with an upper caste village man and would be back in a couple of hours.” It’s this attitude that is part of the problem. Even with stricter laws against rape in India people still look at it as some type of honor in having an upper caste male use them for sex.

But, it doesn’t matter how many laws get passed or how tough they are or how diligently they’re enforced, unless and until men of all countries on the planet start controlling themselves instead of trying to control others, maybe relatives of rape victims should take matters into their own hands like that mother in Malaysia.

Or the father in Maryland.

This dad saw a series of texts between his 15-year old daughter and her 42-year old teacher, texts that the family deemed were inappropriate for a teacher and a student. When the parents reported this to the police the investigators didn’t agree and never charged the teacher with any crime. Then the teacher showed up at their home and asked to speak to the father. He was told he couldn’t and was told to leave. When he refused, the father whacked him with a baseball bat. The teacher sustained minor injuries. Police were called to the scene and the teacher declined to press charges against the father. However, the Crimes Against Children Unit is continuing their investigation.

Psychologists have found that the motivation behind sexual assault is most often the need to dominate and control, rather than the inability to control sexual urges. I’m not so sure about that, at least not in all cases or chemical castration wouldn’t be an option. Rape is primarily an act of power and aggression and blaming the victim can be as traumatic to the victim as the actual rape.

It’s time to make some changes in our thinking, people. The next victim could be you.

Thanks for reading. Until next time.

  1. Ye gods and little fishes… “the excrement is making physical contact with a hydro-electric powered oscillating air current distribution device” is one of the better lines I have heard in awhile… and, if, I might suggest… worthy of somebody no less the ilk of one Dean Koontz.

Piece of trivia… who were Tom And Jerry? … Would you believe the predecessor to Simon and Garfunkle? Google the song, “Hey, Schoolgirl”.

I got nothing to add about the rest… you said it well.

  2. Wish I could take credit for line about the excrement but I Googled a less offensive way of saying the you-know-what-hit-the-fan and I was sent to the Urban Dictionary.

I had forgotten about Simon and Garfunkel starting out as Tom and Jerry. To an entire generation Tom and Jerry are a cartoon cat and mouse…..best friends, of course.Whoever told them to go with their real names was a genius.

There’s one more picture I wanted to add to the blog.

  3. Good job Jane. Back in the day, one of the 1st words we
learned as young men was “jailbait.” The penalty was about 20 years. I can’t wait to read one of these stories with the proper ending; one where instead of suicide, one of these young girls thins the gene pool by taking out the trash.

P.S. Any story with Gabrielle Anwar at the end, is a beautiful story.
