I loved the First Movie. The entire Red Skull and Super Soldier Serum I thought was done well. I felt it was a great set-up for the Avengers and gave Cap the every-man aspect that has made him a loved character. Having a 20 year layoff in the comics is one thing, but having a 70 year layoff is just harder to pull off. Captain America is, at his best, a fish out of water and a one man with a powerful heart not caring about the odds. Part of the reason why he works best when facing down hundreds of Hyrda agents or an island full of A.I.M scientists, and the perfect leader of the Avengers. The hard part is sometimes he can lapse in preachy, and thats never a good thing.
So lets see how the second movie goes? Don’t worry, I have a spoiler -warning coming when I need to.
Steve Rogers is a member of S.H.I.E.L.D. and a member of the strike team. They get a message about a S.H.I.E.L.D. ship in the Indian Ocean being hi-jacked by Georges
St. Pierre er, Batroc the Leaper, a “C” level villain from the Capverse. So Cap, the Black Widow and a S.H.I.E.L.D. team go after the ship, Cap does our first awesome job by just jumping out of the plane with no parachute. He hits the water, and up he goes. There is supposed to be 25 enemies on the ship, plus some S.H.I.E.L.D. techs and Jasper Stillwell.
So Cap takes out 20-odd people, some he pretty much either gravely injured or possibly killed. I’m fine with this turn for Cap, but moving on- The Widow is the next up and she has no problem capping a few people. The rest of the strike team do, uh, Seal Team stuff. The Widow doesn’t quite be where she needs to be and we get our first MEGA-FIGHT SCENE
There we go.
GSP does GSP-things, and one of the better fight scenes in Marvel Cinema history.
Batroc gets beat, and Cap finds the Widow, who is busy putting the entire mainframe in a thumbdrive. Its a GIANT thumbdrive, but still. Cap isn’t happy that the Widow had a different mission than Cap and the rest.
So Cap goes to see Fury, and Fury takes him down to see the next great plan of S.H.I.E.L.D. Operation Insight. Ok, so we have 3 Giant Helicarriers (with new repulsors to replace the turbines- a Stark Idea, nice toss-in there) they are linked to Spy Satellites, and can shoot thousands of people a second. Seems interesting as a concept, but I don’t see how anyone with half a brain could do this- but thats just me. Fury for some reason can’t get into the thumb drive and goes to ROBERT REDFORD to get the project delayed.
Lets jump over to Cap, who is doing Cap things, making a friend of Sam Wilson (who in the comics is an EX-PIMP turned social worker in Harlem) who did 2 tours and works in the VA. He also visits his best girl who is in an old age home. She has Alzheimers, and when she blanks for a second and then acts as if she has never seen Steve since the War- I came close to tearing up. Just a powerful scene, and well acted. It was one heckuva break with normalcy in the Marvel Universe, and a welcome one.
So Fury is leaving headquarters, and he has a funny bit with some cops who are looking at him kid of sideways. Then a whole bunch of cops start shooting up his SUV. Then comes one of the most realistic chase scenes in movie history, yup, idiots in front of him, cars getting T-Boned in intersections, and so forth. I’m not going into all the good parts, but its pretty cool. Finally we get to see the WINTER SOLDIER who shoots a disc toward Fury, that magnetically attaches to the underside of the car, blowing it on the roof. The WINTER SOLDIER rips the car door off, but Mace Windu has used his lightsaber to cut a whole in not only the car roof, but the pavement and escapes. For some reason, the WINTER SOLDIER figures following him in the sewer system would mess up his shoes so he let him go.
Cap gets home, and offers his hot neighbor to use his Washer and Dryer, cause being from the 40s he has lame pick-up lines, sadly he picked maybe the ONE FEMALE IN AMERICA that would shoot him down. I mean really? You shoot down Cap F’N America? Anyway. He comes in and Fury is there. Fury hands over the thumbdrive and says don’t trust anyone- then gets shot, and its the WINTER SOLDIER! Cap gives chase as his hot neighbor says she was Agent 13 (Sharon Carter, Caps first love post icecube, don’t know if she is the daughter of the lady from the first movie.) So Fury is taken to the hospital by Agent 13, Cap has no idea what to do, and Fury is dead. Redford wants to know what Fury told him, and when Cap refuses (No idea why, other than the thumb drive he really didn’t say anything.) Redford brands him a traitor, and he has a MASSIVE fight in the elevator with his former team and every stunt guy on the film.
So I’m quitting there for Spoilers. Cap is a traitor, the Widow is untrustworthy, S.H.I.E.L.D is about to launch 3 gunships and Fury is Dead.
So the Good.
The Action Sequences are AWESOME. The Fight scenes are WELL DONE. I mean I really enjoyed the way the film was done. I don’t do 3D unless I have to, and here I didn’t have to. No real gotta be just for 3D shots.
I do like that we get some throw-ins for the comic fans, If you pay attention, you get Batroc, Agent 13, and CROSSBONES.
Plus the two after credit scenes threw even more in there- even more Nerd!
I’m going to be upfront. The scene with his best girl, the VA stuff where we get Falcon, could have been filler, but it was WELL done and spaced correctly. Could have been cheesy, but I think it was needed, as was the banter between Widow and Cap on his love life, or lack thereof
I really do like Chris Evans in this role. I think he handles the subtle torture that Cap faces in his best story arcs.
Now the negatives.
First, its hard to see where AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. fits in here. I’ll get into that more in the spoilers. I have MAJOR issues with one of the characters, but thats the only major gripe I have. Up to this point? None. I’m loving it.
This movie EARNS its 10 I’m giving it. Well worth the price of a ticket.
