How many of you READ what Phil said?

I wasn’t going to write on this, really I wasn’t.

But this has just taken on a life of its own. A LOT of what I’m reading on is not even accurate or in context.

How many of you have READ what Phil Roberson said, and not just the commentary?Duck Dynasty

First let me be upfront.

I am in Shreveport LA, I am not far from the Duck Commander Compound.

I have never met any of the Robertson Clan, but I know MANY people that have, and I know someone who has hunted with them for decades. All say they are upfront with how they are and what they think. Phil has changed the least of any of them.

Now, This is part of the reason why when I decided to open another site, I dropped the Sports Idea, If I wanted to talk Sports, I could, if I wanted to talk Movie, if I wanted to talk Phil I (or anyone else) can.

So let me paste EXACTLY what he said in GQ- I do love the fact that Phil Robertson is in GQ.

“Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men,” he tells reporter Drew Magary. “Don’t be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers—they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.”

He also muses about his own sexual orientation: “It seems like, to me, a vagina—as a man—would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me. I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical.”

In GQ’s own article, the author states that Phil equates Homosexuality with bestiality.

I know I’m not as refined as most GQ readers, But I don’t see where a man sleeping with a man is the same thing as sleeping with a sheep. I just don’t see where he is saying its the same thing I DO see where he is saying its a sexual sin. I can see where you might draw the conclusion that he is saying if you crack the door on making homosexuality “normal”, then all kinds of “deviancy” might be considered the norm.

Like Dancing, Alcohol. letting women and black people vote, letting Homos marry.

Think about it. 150 years ago having a man marry another man is just as sick as a 40 year old man marrying a 12 year old girl today.

In Roman time ago a young boy was expected to have relations with older men, both for social and political advantages. Personal harems and house slaves were the norm.

So lets cut the BS. What is considered nasty and disgusting today, was not decrepit yesterday, and might not be considered awful tomorrow.

Want my own thoughts? Fine. I got no problem with it. I have a very good male friend who is looking to marry another man next year. I have a gay brother, who I don’t have contact with- for reasons that have nothing to do with that aspect of his life. I personally see nothing attractive about the male form, so it does nothing to me. I have much desire to see Brad Pitt naked as I do Clint Howard. Its just not the way I’m wired.

So lets get back to Phil.

PhilReligion is a choice. I can decide if I want to believe if there is a God. I can belive in one God, a few Gods or a LOT of Gods.

I can choose who my number 1 prophet is- Jesus, Mohammed, Budda, Moses, Oprah, whomever.

I can look on a map and find a dozen different churches each with its own doctrine and interpretation of the Bible. I’m in the Deep South, I can walk to a church in less than 15 minutes from where I sit. If I go to my Ex-Wifes, I can walk to one in under 10. As a boy, I could walk to the church I went to growing up in under 20 minutes.

Phil Robertson has picked his religion, and how he believes in God. Thankfully, he lives in a country that he may do so and not be beheaded or burned at the stake for it.

What he cannot do is change the perspective of the people who read what he wrote. How some businesses and groups take what he said and how they interpret it.

What people have done, in this country, when they find someone disagreeable, is they go after the money, You are never going to get the Duck Commander calls out of stores, they are too popular and too well made. Under Armor is a Male Dominated advertiser, and is not about to drop them.

So that leaves A&E. Who is stuck in a hard spot. Duck Dynasty is one of the most popular shows in cable history.

A&E is owned 50/50 by Disney, and the Hearst Corporation, both of whom cannot last without advertisers and goodwill of the public. Disney, I’m sure you know, Hearst owns most of those magazines that are on the “respectable” side of the magazine rack. (Elle, O, Cosmo etc) and a TON of newspapers- the largest being.

The San Francisco Chronicle. I’m sure that has nothing to to with anything.

GQ, by the way is not owned by either company.

Disney has for years bent over backward for diversity’s sake, take Modern Family for example, and I am sure they are the driving force behind putting Phil on Hiatus.

The problem for Disney is, they just made the situation worse. The groundswell to defend Phil is just going to make them more money than had GLAAD and the rest left the situation alone.

Phil and his clan are not hurting for money, they were not hurting before the TV show came along.

So where does this leave the controversy?

A&E created this monster, they already poked it once with editing, They really ticked Phil off when they asked him to take Jesus out of the prayer, they cannot stand behind their “Star” Phil doesn’t need them, they need him. If they can’t sell Duck Commander Cookbooks in San Fran or NYC, that’s perfectly fine to the family.

The family has stood behind Phil and I’m sure some lawyers are getting rich as we speak. I am sure if A&E releases the family, there will be no shortage of cable TV providers who would love to get their hands on the property.

So let me leave you with the words of the Governor of this State, Bobby Jindal, who has designs on the White House. Again, I hope he never comes close, for reasons that have nothing to do with this either.

“Phil Robertson and his family are great citizens of the State of Louisiana. The politically correct crowd is tolerant of all viewpoints, except those they disagree with. I don’t agree with quite a bit of stuff I read in magazine interviews or see on TV.  In fact, come to think of it, I find a good bit of it offensive.

But I also acknowledge that this is a free country and everyone is entitled to express their views.  In fact, I remember when TV networks believed in the First Amendment. It is a messed up situation when Miley Cyrus gets a laugh, and Phil Robertson gets suspended.”

Way to pander Bobby, he is term limited, and he needs all the money he can get to try and get that Senate Seat.

  1. Excellent piece, David…

I read what he said in the NYDN and the News jumped to the same conclusion that a lot of peeps have jumped to… i.e., that he equated homosexuality with bestiality and my immediate reaction was: No, he did not… he said it is a sin the same way whoring around is a sin, bestiality is a sin, etc…
If I said a dog is an animal.. the same way a cat is an animal, or a cow is animal… I am not saying dogs, cats and cows are the same thing., I’m just saying they are all animals… or is my sense of logic just off?

People need to not just believe everything they hear and think for themselves.
