The New York Jets signed Josh Cribbs on Tuesday in an effort to give their return game a boost. This isn’t the first time NY has flirted with bringing in Cribbs, he visited the Jets earlier this year in May. He visited 4 teams before signing with the Raiders who ultimately released him before the season opener.
“I love it when hard work meets opportunity! God is so good,” Cribbs tweeted on Tuesday.
The Jets special teams is horrendous 6 weeks into the season, they are 27th in kick return yardage (20.3 yards per return) and 14th in punt return yardage (8.2 yards per return). They are also averaging just 17.3 points per game (29th in the NFL) and the hope is Cribbs can recapture some of his game breaking play he exhibited in 8 seasons with the Cleveland Browns when he had 8 kick returns for touchdowns and 3 punt returns for TD’s.
Last year with Cleveland, he averaged 27.4 yards per kickoff return (4th) and 12 yards per punt return (6th). If he can duplicate that at the age of 30, the Jets will surely be happy. If he can get a few TD’s it will take some pressure off rookie quarterback Geno Smith who forces too many passes that often result in turnovers. He has thrown 10 interceptions so far this season, 3rd most in the League.
Over the course of his career, he has caught 107 passes for 1,161 yards (11 yards per catch) with 7 TD’s and carried the ball 128 times for 753 yards (5.9 yards per carry) and 2 TD’s. However, he isn’t expected to run or catch the ball much, despite WR Santonio Holmes missing his 3rd consecutive game with a hamstring injury against the Steelers.
Mike Goodson suffered a season ending knee injury in their 19-6 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Goodson was attempting to tackle Pittsburgh LB Lawrence Timmons after Geno Smith threw his 2nd interception. Goodson is one of the most explosive players on NY’s roster as evident by his 8.7 yards per carry and 30.5 rushing yards per game in 2 games. He also caught 3 passes (2 for first downs) for 20 yards.
In order to make room for him on the roster, the team placed Clyde Gates (shoulder injury) on the injured reserve, ending his season prematurely. They also signed wide receiver Greg Salas from Philadelphia’s practice squad.
