The Ultimate Fighter
We come into talking about what an opportunity this is, and we meet Jones sitting around the gym, Sonnen comes in and they talk for a bit. Sonnen has changed into a nice guy, even talking about the bikes and what a hard situation the fighters are in. Jones, as usual doesn’t say much.
Dana does address how Sonnen got the fight. I’m still trying to remember how Belfort got a 205 title shot. Someone show me where he was the #1 contender again?
In a new twist, the family and friends get to come see the fights to get into the house. Pretty nice of them to add more pressure in the biggest fight of their lives.
The Show does a pretty good job of giving us a quick 20-60 spot on the fighters before they hit the cage, if any of them give an interesting tidbit, I’ll let you know. Most of it is- I got a bad story, this is the fight of my life, yada yada yada. I understand you are fighting for your future, its the hook of the show that TUF tries to push. To be honest, I get more upset if you have 7 kids in a cardboard box back home when you can’t fight than if you are a middle class guy getting a shot and lose a good entry fight.
Adam Cella (4-0), 27, Fenton, Mo. Turned onto MMA when his dad took him to a live fight.
Jake Heun (3-2), 25, Salt Lake City, Utah – Called the Leben guy, and fights like it.
Adam does a heckuva job getting a GREAT submission.
Zach Cummings (15-3), 28, Kansas City, Mo. BOTH A BELLATOR AND STRIKEFORCE VET, Says wifes more a UFC fan than he is. Oh Goody.
Nik Fehete (5-1), 32, Las Vegas, Nev. – Fought twice in BELLATOR
Well, thats good, get two guys who have had a shot against each other, avoid 2 Mac Danzigs.
Nik goes for a kick, leaves his hands low and Zak knocks him out backing up Anderson/Forrest Style
Eldon Sproat (3-1), 27, Molohai, Hawaii – Cowboy. Says there were Cowboys in Hawaii before there were in Texas. Google says first Cow got to Hawaii in 1794. Interesting.
Kevin Casey (5-2), 31, Hawthorne, Calif. – STRIKEFORCE VET – Grew up around the Gracie family.
We don’t get the full fight, but a good clip of highlights. In 2 hours we can’t get the whole thing? Kevin gets a pretty good cut over his eye, but gets the submission.
“Excellent Fight” Jones “Quick Fight” – Dana – but we don’t get it?
Scott Rosa (4-1), 27, Sparks, Nev. Dude beat JAMES IRVIN! – Shows off for the camera.
Tor Troeng (15-4-1), 29, Umea, SWE – Nickname the Hammer, They keep calling him “Thor”
Sonnen and Jones actually talk here, Sonnen asks Jones about long-kicking him, Jones is showing almost NO PERSONALITY Tor wins with a submission
Frasier Opie (10-5), 25, Milton Keynes, ENG – Says if not for fighting he’s be in Prison
Clint Hester (7-3), 24, Atlanta, Ga.
Jones likes Clint, even doing some coaching from the table. Sonnen calls him on it. Clint wins via scorecards, shows off very good wrestler. Calls the house like Federal Prison. Love the Southerner.
Ryan Lee Q. Bigler (9-3), 28, Guam – Talks up Guam. Nothing wrong there.
Bubba McDaniel (20-6), 29, Albuquerque, N.M. – Jacksons Fighter
Jones coaches Bubba, Sonnen calls him on it for being a teammate. Wins via stoppage.
Josh Samman (9-2), 24, Tallahassee, Fla. Has tried out for the show FOUR TIMES!
Leo Bercier (7-2), 31, Great Falls, Montana Native American. Talks that up. Does a very good job of making you like him.
Josh has some Chael in him, Yelling are you ready! Throwing Sakuraba double fists, Dana is unimpressed, Jones and Sonnen love it. Jones yells at him to not waste his energy and he goes to single punches and finishes. Chael actually got up from the table.
Kito Andrews (9-2), 34, Sacramento, Calif. Just won custody of his two boys. Gonna be a hard 6 weeks if he wins.
Kelvin Gastelum (5-0), 20, Yuma, Ariz. 9-5 Bail Bondsman, youngest fighter ever in TUF (21)
Clip fight. Kito is shown with his kids. Kelvin cries.
Jimmy Quinlan (3-0), 26, Metheun, Mass. DUDES A COP!!! Says he competed a thousand times with wrestling and Ju-Ju tournaments
Mike Persons (3-0), 28, Stockton, Calif. Works in a feed store
Clip fight, Both Coaches talk about Jimmy just wrestling him to death and getting a finish in R1.
Uriah Hall (7-2), 28, New York City, N.Y. Got picked on in school, went to a shrink, said he had no confidence, Martial Arts school next door. Good story
Andy Enz, (6-1), 21, Anchorage, Alaska – Talks about his dad.
Hall just looks great, but seems way too willing to go where the other wants to go. Andy is tough though, ate some major hits. Andy almost steals the fight a few times. So far if someone can’t continue in the house, Andy is the obvious choice.
Gilbert Smith (5-1), 30, Colorado Springs, Colo.
Eric Wahlin (5-1), 29, Taylorsville, Utah – Goes over how Broke he is.
Gilbert just wrestles him out, Eric is actually OUT but is still PUNCHING. Good reffing there to see the difference.
Nicholas Hohring (3-0), 22, Valley Springs, Calif.
Luke Barnatt (5-0), 24, Cambridge, ENG – SIX FOOT SIX!
Clip fight. Luke dominated but Hohring wouldn’t go away, according to the Coaches
Dylan Andrews (16-4-1), 32, Gold Coast, AUS
Timothy Williams (7-1), 26, Millville, N.J. – Got a scary look to him
Clip fight, Dylan by des
Mike Jaspar (6-0), 29, Camarillo, Calif. Semi-pro QB
Collin Hart (4-1-1), 23, Santa Rosa, Calif. Nickname: “The Dick”
Clip, again. Jones says Jasper reminds him of Couture. Of course, Collin wins. Oops
We go to the fighter picks.
I like Tor and Uriah, Luke is another Kendall Grove. Zak has all that experience. Clint and Josh are the Southerners. So far I think Sonnen has the better squad, but with the clips, who knows?
2 guys on Sonnen’s team wanted to be on Team Jones, Uriah seems like he got over it quickly.
Team Jones picks first fight, and the fighters all go together and wrote up a list of who should fight who. They think they have a plan to sweep the season. You would think Kevin Casey would be the target with the cut, but they go with Gilbert Smith vs Luke Barnett.
