Very true, Todd... the bowl structure was always about making money for bowls, not for teams to get just rewards.
One thing to remember, though, is that many BCS teams have lost games against opponents that they should have downright blown out -- Florida State against NC State, Kansas State against 4-5 Baylor, Louisville against a 4-5 Syracuse team... as well as the fact that, come the playoff system in 2014, NIU would also be in the big-boy field as the top qualifier from the five mid-major conferences. Without a fair means of including the best teams from non-AQ leagues, you'd quickly have a Sherman Act violation on your hands... which is why the top-12/top-16 rules were put into play in the first place.

"the disappointment of losing a winnable game against Iowa "

This is where you probably should have stopped typing. There are lots of reason why the BCS is screwed up. Hopefully, the inclusion of this kind of team in a marquis game will force the hands of the bigwigs that make the rules. Ugh.

What I think this shows is that this is a down year for college football, this year's Notre Dame and Alabama teams would not be able to compete with the top 5 teams from 2008. The sad state of affairs of the media complaining about this is that we are willing to protect teams in the AQ conferences when they have a down year but don't want to elevate less teams during that same down year. Kirk end all of this conversation and start to promote a different financial split of the bowl games, winner gets 75% and loser gets 25%. You will see the matchups take care of themselves and you will see the lower tiered bowl games go away because 25% of a 1.5 million dollar purse isn't worth playing in. You want to solve the problem, solve the problem, but we want everyone to be happy and everyone get a participation trophy so that's the reality accept it.

I'm with you, all the way until you start giving numbers of the Huskies.

How would they do vs an ACC alate? A Big Ten slate, heck a SEC slate?

Other than the Pac 10 and Big 12, who also don't play D, would thier numbers look the same? How would LA Tech do vs the teams on the Husker plate? I would be willing to bet pretty durn good, even if Tech fell off the wagon the last two games of the season.

The Problem with NI getting in, while BETTER teams like LSU, UGA and OU sit home is the SAME reason they are.

Money. The BCS gave HARD qualifications for a non AQ team to get in, to shut them up, never thinking that one of thier own would have legit arguments for HALF the spots out there.

If we truly reanked these teams in a 16 team playoff, I would think the SEC would own half the home games, and NI would be playing ND in round 1, or at worst, Alabama.

But way to go Huskers, and I hope you enjoy the BCS check another team deserves, but you get anyway through sweat and hard work.
