So a Oklahoma Highway Patrol friend of mine said, “You know, I don’t know what it is about folks, but as soon as I get behind them they start getting nervous. I bet not a single driver can go ten miles without making at least one illegal or unsafe move when I am behind them.”
To which I replied, “I find that hard to believe. It has been my experience that when folk see a patrol car they straighten up and pay closer attention.”
He said, “Come ride with me, I’ll prove it”
So we got in the cruiser and he headed up the interstate. He caught up to a car in the right hand lane and we began following at a moderate distance. In the first two miles the car never waivered from the constant 70 mph they were going. The next three miles proved the same thing. After five miles the car signaled properly as it passed a slower car and then signaled properly again as it moved back to the right lane. We reached an exit twelve miles up the road and the car signaled and exited properly from the interstate.
I was grinning and my friend said, “I can’t believe it! Not a single violation of any sort. You know what, I think I will pull him over anyway and comment him on his driving ability.”
So my friend turned on the light bar and the car promptly signaled right and pulled over. We got out and without his ticket book my friend walked up the driver’s side window. The driver had already lowered the window and my friend said, “Friend, that was about the best display of driving skills I have ever witnessed for the last ten or twelve miles”
The driver said, “Well thanks officer, but you know you have to be extra careful when you’re drunk!”
