NFL Trade Value- Postscript and Review

First off, if you have not read the Trade Value column on Grantland- go read the excellent work of Mr Bill Barnwell here

Pretend you are Marty Hunley.
As Panthers GM, you have to improve that secondary.

Rex Ryan calls you up and offers you Darrelle Revis.

Wetting your pants, you mentally wonder if you can legally trade draftpicks 10 years out. You stammer out- “For how much?”

“Just a player” comes the reply.

Thinking maybe they want to solve that running game once and for all, you hit the speed button on the NFL trade office and ask who.

“Cam Newton”

Uh what? What about Sanchez?

“You can have him too, for a 3rd”

You want him or Revis Island?

Let me call you back.

Hang up the phone. Disconnect with the NFL office.

Do you giggle? Or start printing jerseys?

I’m betting you fall on the floor laughing. I bet Peter King hangs up on you thinking its April 1. John Clayton cusses you out for hacking the real GM’s phone.

In the inaugural Trade Value Column, Bill Barnwell gives a twist on the Simmons NBA player ranking.

Not only is Revis above Cam, but so is Demarcus Ware. I don’t think Carolina bites on a 3 teamer where they get BOTH players.

I agree with most of Barnwells rankings- in fact, it would have been on par with the Wizard of Boston’s own rankings had he done one for QB’s and one for everyone else.

The problem with the QB, is there is only one. In my fantasy draft, I took Brees round 1, then in the 7th Phillip Rivers was still there, so I took him, but in the 12th, Luck was still there- I would have taken him in the 9th, where I had him pegged, but he was still there. I can’t carry 3 QBs in a non keeper.

Same thing on a NFL team. Calvin Johnson is great- but I can add Steve Smith and Victor Cruz with no problem. Got Ray Rice? Sure, I’ll give SF a pick or two for Gore. Think Patrick Willis and Jon Beason can’t play together?

Not to beat a dead horse, but I don’t think the Jets get Rivers (15) or even Flacco (27) for him- heck the Lions probably hang up when asked for Stafford (32). Matt is even ranked below Suh, in case you were wondering.

Barnwell’s top 5,

Better than Matt Ryan, sure
More Valuable?

Is almost perfect. I would put Cam 5th, due to him TINY contract, and the fact that Eli’s got a few years on him, plus has never come CLOSE to the Madden cover.

I also think RG3 is a bit low as well.

18. Jay Cutler
17. Michael Vick
16. Robert Griffin III
15. Philip Rivers
14. Ben Roethlisberger

Then no other QBs (you trading Joe Thomas for any of these guys? Barnwell does)

9. Matt Ryan
8 Cam Newton.

So 12 of the top 18 players are QBs on the Trade Value- if you took only the QBs its a good list, and I’d take Big Ben at 6, then RG3, then Ryan, and to be honest, contracts being a factor, Vick is MUCH farther down the list.

All in All, a great concept, and if he does 2 lists, I’ll be looking forward to Barnwell, as I do Simmons annual list.
